Persons flying kites in open spaces in Georgetown will have to pay to do so to assist with preparation of the areas and clean-up activities afterwards.

“Citizens who use the areas would be required to pay a minimal fee to offset expenses, and to assist with after event cleaning activities,” the City administration said.

In a release, City Hall did not disclose the amount of money to be paid and opted only to say it would be “minimal.” Several calls to the Town Clerk, Royston King’s office went unanswered and a City Hall spokeswoman did not immediately provide the information.

The open spaces for which payment would be required to fly kits are the seawall, Merriman Mall, Roxanne Burnham Gardens playground, East Ruimveldt, Evan Phillips Park Agricola, West Ruimveldt, Burnham Playground in Kitty, Lamaha Gardens  Ground and Durban Park.

City Hall said it was the Mayor and Councillors who were finalizing arrangements to facilitate the traditional kite flying activity in observance of Easter. However, the life of the Council has come to an end to make way for the holding of Local Government Elections held on March 19, 2016.

The City’s administration said it would be enhancing the aesthetics of its Municipal grounds by weeding, cleaning, and placing sanitary facilities and refuse receptacles.  This is necessary to allow Citizens to dispose of their waste in environmentally friendly manner, and to ensure environmental integrity.

“It has been observed that after public events, public spaces are often left in an insanitary manner. The Council is urging persons who would use the ground to utilize the facilities that would be made available.”

Vendors have to pay a fee not kite flyers.

Only businesses and vendors being charged for use of city spaces for Easter -Town Clerk

In an interview at his City Hall office, Mr. King explained that City Hall has never charged for use of its open spaces by regular citizens. He said what the municipality has done, is indicate to vendors and business owners who are desirous of using the city's parks and open spaces for their Easter Monday selling, to pay a fee to City Hall to assist with the clean-up that will have to follow.

Town Clerk of the City of Georgetown, Royston King, has completely dismissed as “completely false” a report by another news outlet that the City Council intended to charge kite flyers for use of the council’s open spaces for their Easter Monday activities.

In an interview at his City Hall office, Mr. King explained that City Hall has never charged for use of its open spaces by regular citizens. He said what the municipality has done, is indicate to vendors and business owners who are desirous of using the city’s parks and open spaces for their Easter Monday selling, to pay a fee to City Hall to assist with the clean-up that will have to follow.

Usually, after the easter kite flying activities, City Hall would be forced to call in additional contractors to assist with clearing the areas of garbage.

The clean up efforts would take days and over the past years, businesses and vendors would not pay any fee to set up their food and drink bars along the Georgetown seawalls and at the various grounds maintained by the municipality.

King said “we regret that misinformation and we are not sure where it is coming from, but certainly it has not been the practice of this municipality to charge people to fly kites or even engage in allied activities on easter Monday. What we have said is that we are asking vendors and business people who are desirous of doing business on that day to  make a contribution to the council, by paying a small fee which will help us to offset cleaning expenses and to help us to sustain the works which we have started in the city. But certainly not to picnic, certainly not to fly kites, certainly not to engage in allied activities. This is completely wrong and it is certainly not coming from us.”

“I am saying to citizens that there is no charge on kite flying by the city council”, he affirmed.

King explained that the council is really targeting the businesses places that intend to do business on the seawalls on Easter Monday.

He also announced a new initiative by the city council to improve the cleanliness of the city. A number of upright garbage receptacles are being installed across the main areas of the city for collection of garbage. And persons are being urged to separate their disposal also.

They should get volunteers or the prisoners to do the clean up.  Why do people have to pay these fees?  Not nice for a sacred holiday!

Kite flying as I knew is still an enjoyment for kids for generations on Easter time. Now, what would Jesus think about these leaches?

Jesus would ask the father to put some common sense into the head of the fools who are in charge of GT.

I agree with your idea. Instead of them rioting and burning down Camp Street, they should be given an outing of fresh air and to clean up after Easter. Their job it to pay back society. 

I don't see an issue with vendors paying a fee to do business in those places. They would have that same fee anywhere else. What I will be looking at is if this guy's statements are accurate come Monday. Nonetheless, if he is inaccurate, it wouldn't be the first time this new government has broken their word.

In civilized countries vendor pay for space they use but as usual on GNI,some miserable creeps always crying because PPP LOST and they make up shit to suit themselves.

It wasn't a misinformation when the PNC kick out Sooba so he can sit his black ass in the woman's chair.

Sooba was an Interim Management plant by the PPP,she was not elected.

Royston King is a liar.  He pack-peddled from his own remarks after he was confronted by people who are opposed to citizens paying fees - from within his own party.  How many times have we seen back-peddling from this government?  See attached.

I believe he is serving in an appointed position.  But that could have been one of the positions contested in LGE.  When results are official, I will check.

Where is his original speech? To whom was it given? Last year they authorized a fee for vendors but Ms Sooba stopped it.

Tell that to the City of New York charging y'all thousands to clean up the park on Saturday.

Let them clean up the city.  More Indian and Chinese businesses will move in and create jobs.  Hope they don't get discouraged when they see progress.
