Demolished stalls at Bourda

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Tensions are running high with vendors at the Bourda Market after the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) early Monday morning demolished several stalls along the Bourda Street roadway as part of its efforts to demolish the Bedford Building on Charlotte street.

The move by the council comes after weeks of protests by the vendors who claimed that the reason provided by City Hall for their removal was not solid.

One of the protest actions was staged outside of the Ministry of the Presidency which houses the offices of the President, Prime Minister and Minister of State.

Reports reaching iNews indicate that bulldozers moved in on the stalls just after 5:00AM on Monday September 07, laying waste to several stalls on the perimeters of the Bedford building.

Vendors claim that they have been using the paves to conduct business for some 39 years and the sudden move by the City Council has put them in dire straits.

The vendors are also upset given that their goods were in the stalls at the time of the demolishing and have now been reduced to mere debris. Losses by the vendors are estimated to reach into the millions.
