We are worried about my cousin’s wife in Queens. He died a few days ago and now she has it. They have two kids 10/16. We hope she recovers and they are not orphaned! She seems to be holding up.

A US-based Guyanese woman has lost both of her parents to COVID-19 in Houston, Texas, United States at the weekend.
Guyanese nationals, 74-year-old Abdul Wahaab and 71-year-old Tesrun Wahaab died hours apart at the Houston Methodist Hospital.
They were married for 53 years and lived at New Road Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara before migrating to the United States.
The couple’s daughter, Waheeda Hussain in an interview with KPRC-TV –an NBC associated television station in Houston Texas – said she dropped her father to the Emergency Room on Friday and her mother on Saturday. They did not spend a week before they succumbed.
“It was just so fast…” she said.
“We were able to recite the Quran for them just as their last Islamic rights so they can be at peace,” she told the news agency.
Hussain, who was also tested positive for COVID-19, was forced to watch from a car as the bodies of her parents were lowered into the ground by persons dressed in hazmat suits.
Waheeda Hussain is urging persons to take the disease seriously and do everything possible to protect themselves and loved ones.
“It’s not a game, it’s not a joke, it’s not a hoax, this Coronavirus is taking lives. If you don’t have to go out, do not go out. Do whatever you can to protect yourself and loved ones,” she pleaded.

Dr Ramesh Sugrim, a 66-year-old general practitioner who has been serving Guyana for over 30 years, is currently battling for his life after being diagnosed with the COVID-19 disease in the United States of America.
Dr Sugrim, who has his practice in East Berbice Corentyne, tested positive on March 27 while visiting his family in the U.S.
His wife, Parbattie Sugrim and his son Dr Surendra Sugrim also tested positive for the disease and are said to be recovering but the senior Dr Sugrim is listed in a critical condition.
His brother Suresh Sugrim who is the President of the Humanitarian Mission in Guyana says a miracle is needed.
“We are asking for your prayers at this moment irrelevant of which religious denomination you belong to. It has been a very difficult time due to coronavirus and you all are quite aware of the current pandemic, we would like to say to you and take this moment to thank everyone for their, care, concern and many blessings and I am asking that you continue to keep Dr Sugrim and his immediate family under your prayers.
“He is no stranger to anyone in Guyana. We are all praying that God does some kind of miracle for him,” his brother told the News Room Tuesday.
A father of two, Dr Sugrim left his family in the U.S and chose to work in Guyana.
He has a clinic at Williamsburg on the Corentyne. He established a reputation of being amongst the best when it comes to diagnosing and treating patients with Cerebrovascular accident (CVA) known as ‘stroke.’

Still grappling with the loss of their first Captain, Wendell ‘Dragga’ Manifold, to the dreaded Coronavirus which has rocked the world, the Pele Football Club family has been hit once again with the loss of former executive, William ‘Billy’ Braithwaite who passed away on Tuesday last in the USA.
William ‘Billy’ Braithwaite
Braithwaite, who never played the game, however distinguished himself as an executive member joining the club as President (ag.). According to founder of Pele FC, Lennox Arthur who introduced Braithwaite to the sport; his rich service to the club commenced in December 1973 following the passing of Pele’s second President, Dr. Frank Watson who had passed away in a plane crash on December 3, 1973. The original President of the club for a short period was Mr. Cecil B. McKenzie who served from inception, July 18, 1971. “He {Braithwaite} came to offer condolences to the club following the passing of his friend Dr. Watson, he was very eloquent in delivering remarks. His being a part of us was almost an instant when we listened to him as we were looking for persons to serve us at that time. Active players were functioning as executive members so we were happy to welcome him on board.” Braithwaite, a former member of the Guyana Cultural Association of New York, later took over the reins of the club as Secretary in 1974 when John Yates was elected President and according to Arthur, this further showed the versatility of Braithwaite.

“When he joined us, I can recall that it was then that we really started to be a functioning club as we started to have club nights at his house where players from other clubs would join us. Yes, we were the best team at the time but he really helped us transform into a functioning club. His love for the club grew from strength to strength to the extent that he even found jobs for players at the time so that they could have taken care of their responsibilities off the field of play as well. He was indeed an affable individual person; his presence at Pele streamlined the club officially; we were able to get a club house were which further pulled us together as a team.” Braithwaite was 74 years old at the time of his passing.

By Harry Ramkhelawan One of Guyana's most prominent citizens, presently a resident of London, Ontario – Mr Chetram Singh – was the Chief Guest and Award Recipient at the 14th Annual Fund Raising Dinner and Special Recognition Award event of the Pranav Mandir held last Saturday in Etobicoke. Friends and families of Mr Singh and supporters of the Pranav Mandir numbering about 300 gathered to felicitate the Awardee and at the same time, enjoy an evening of inspiring cultural performances by students of the Pranav Heritage and Music class. Two grandchildren - Rishi Singh and Rohana Roshni Singh – along with son Dr Narendra Singh, of the honored guest spoke on his behalf and gave some interesting insights into the life of this patriarch of the family. Mr Singh himself also spoke briefly. The grandchildren disclosed that their Aja (paternal grandfather) was not too excited about his being nominated for the Recognition Award which in itself reveals an attribute of Mr Singh in not wanting to be in the limelight or seeking self promotion. The audience was told what is common knowledge to most Guyanese in the 1960s up to the early 1970s: that the name 'Chetram Singh' and the title of Hospital Administrator in Guyana were interchangeable. His was a household name. Mr Singh, born at Plantation Ogle in 1930, joined the Public Hospital Georgetown as a clerk and was awarded a government scholarship in 1954 to study Hospital Administration in Britain which he completed in three years placing first in the final exams for the entire British Commonwealth and earning a medal in the process. He returned to Guyana and served in hospital administration until his resignation in 1973. He was Admistrator of both the Georgetown and Berbice Hospitals, the latter encompassing four hospitals. Side by side with his professional life, Mr Singh worked in the promotion of Hinduism and Indian culture in Guyana. According to the presentation made by his grandchildren, the young Chetram grew up under the influence of his own Aja – Raghunandan – who had migrated from India in 1887 while only seven years old. His Aja, who was fond of reading the Ramayan, taught him many Shlokas and helped him understand Hinduism and Hindu philosophy. While admisistrating at the Georgetown Hospital, Mr Singh served as Secretary of the Mahatma Gandhi Organization at Thomas Lands, Georgetown. In 1960, after being transferred as Administrator of the Berbice Hospitals, he became active in the Guyana Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha as Chairman of the Berbice Regional Committee and Senior Vice President of this national organization. In May 1966, the United Nations Representative in Guyana, Mr Paul Harding, presented Mr Singh with the Ashok Chakra Gold Medal on behalf of the Berbice Bharati Sewah Sangh for meritorious services to the Hindu community in the county. Mr Singh was concerned about the practice in Guyana of Christian missionaries denigrating Hindus and Hinduism and offering jobs and other incentives to convert them. To help educate Hindus, Mr Singh was involved in inviting Hindu missionaries from India – Professor Bhaskarananda, Swami Purnananda, Swami Chinmayananda etc – to hold Yajnas and deliver lectures and to train local pandits in the Hindu philosophy. In addition, he was involved in inviting Indian playback singers from the film industry – Hemant Kumar, Mohamed Rafi, Manna Day, Mukesh etc – to boost the Indian psyche culturally. Mr Singh was also part of the drive to petition the then President of Guyana, Forbes Burnham, for Hindus to have the same percentage of national holidays as the Christians did. The result was that Guyana obtained two national holidays in the calendar – Diwali and Holi. On his arrival in Canada Mr Singh took up the position as Senior Administrative Consultant in hospital administration with the Ontario Ministry of Health with responsibility for monitoring 42 government hospitals in south western Ontario, three of which are academic teaching hospitals in the City of London, Ontario. There he also managed the St Joseph Teaching Hospital owned by the Sisters of St Joseph. True to his Hindu instincts, he took up the chairmanship of the Hindu Cultural Centre in London. A close friend of Mr Singh – Nowrang Persaud – formerly a Personnel Manager at Guysuco, made a special trip from Guyana to be present at this momentous award ceremony.
TRIBUTE TO THE LATE Mr CHETRAM SINGH, A GUYANESE ICON
Dear Editor, On Friday 8th April, 2016, as soon as I arrived at the airport in Toronto, my daughter told me that Mr Chetram Singh, a family friend, soul-brother and above all a great son of Guyana, died peacefully in his home in Toronto, Canada, with his devoted wife, Jean, by his side and his most prized ‘possessions’, his sons and other family members around him. Most compatriots in Guyana and the diaspora in Canada of the 1950-1960’s vintage will recall this unique, iconic professional in the field of Hospital Administration and his sterling contribution to the development of cricket, especially in Berbice as President of the Berbice Cricket Board as well as his unmatched contribution to religious and community development especially among the Hindus throughout Guyana and the province of Ontario in Canada. Born in 1930, in a humble home in difficult circumstances in the Ogle sugar estate, Chetram Singh achieved such great heights by dint of his hard work that would put many of us then and most of us now, who are in much more favourable contexts, to shame or envy. He excelled academically in Primary and Secondary schools. After a brief stint as a teacher and clerk in the Georgetown Public Hospital, he won a 4-year British Commonwealth scholarship to study hospital Administration in the UK which he not only completed in record time (about two years) but he also won the prestigious Harding Medal for being the most outstanding graduate in Hospital Administration in 1957, in the then British Commonwealth. On his return to Guyana, he rotated among the smaller hospitals and eventually became the Administrator of the Georgetown Public Hospital. He migrated to Canada in the early 1970’s, joined the Ontario Ministry of Health where he distinguished himself as an expert in Hospital administration before becoming the Chief Operations Officer of the St Joseph’s Hospital in London, Ontario. After retiring from the latter in the early 1990’s, he accepted a Consultancy assignment with the Ministry of Health in Guyana which was funded by the IDB and which afforded him the opportunity to indulge, albeit briefly, his nostalgia of working and serving in Guyana. Among the many legacies left by the late Chetram Singh are his well accomplished sons who are making their own excellent contributions to society in various fields , especially medicine, in Canada, Trinidad and Guyana; for example, Guyanese and Canadians are well aware of the outstanding work being done in the practice and teaching of medicine by Dr Narendra Singh, BSc, MBBS,FRCP, FAAP,FCCM, Chief of Staff of Humber River Hospital, one of, if not the most, modern hospital in Canada and Clinical Professor of McMaster University. Nar, as he is fondly called, also does yeoman work in hospitals in Guyana, does fundraising for sick children and teaches in the UG medical program. Nowrang Persaud
1957 - 2020 It is with deep sadness, I announce the passing of my sister-in-law, Seukumarie Hardeen also known as Kumarie to Covid-19, formerly from Hampshire Village, Berbice, Guyana. She was the wife of my brother, Dennis Hardeen (CHS Grad of 1974). She was the mother of Jennifer and Joseph. She was the daughter of Betty Chankoo. She was the daughter-in-law of Ruby Hardeen, sister-in-law of Cherrita Hardeen-Bharrat and Harvey Hardeen.
Another beloved Station Agent, Harrichand Persaud, 69, has succumbed to the virus. Brother Persaud had 30 years of service with NYCT. While working on the J line as lunch relief in late March he felt ill, and went out sick two days before a scheduled vacation. The vacation turned out to be a battle with the coronavirus. He passed on April 11th at North Shore Hospital.
His son, NYPD Officer Dewan Persaud, said his father “was planning on retiring but never got around to it. He enjoyed going to work and being with his co-workers.” Brother Persaud leaves his wife, Dianne, son Dewan and a daughter, Shivana. Station VP Lynwood Whichard called Brother Persaud, “an old soul,” and said he would be greatly missed.

Carmen Patricia Jones aka Patsy Jones transitioned to the eternal on Tuesday March 31, 2020. She succumbed to Covid19 while hospitalized at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. After leaving Guyana she pursued a nursing career at Long Island College Hospital. She leaves behind to mourn her seven children, seven siblings and numerous family members in Guyana and the USA. She will be sorely missed.

There are investigations being done in nursing homes in Toronto as to to the many deaths of seniors, it is rumoured that many deaths in the old aged homes are done by the nurses to get rid of the old folkes. Almost all the deaths are from the retirement homes , these old people are Staying at Home, they don't leave the premises. Someone is bringing something to kill them. NOT Covid!!
You are wicked and evil. Your statement is fallacious. Many of the workers are part time care givers and they work in more than one homes, thereby transferring the virus. The Ontario Ministry of Health has taken immediate corrective action. You son is a Doctor. I am certain that he would not appreciate your evilness.
When would you ever have good to say, I said it is rumored ,I know of people in the home care and nursing field , do you know these people have drugs to give patients that can mess with their heads, if given in excess can kill them.
when old people die they assume is old age they seldom do a postmortem . Check with your doctor , I don't want to waste time to argue with you.

Montreal police, coroner investigating owner of seniors' residence where 31 died in less than 1 month
Public health agency has taken charge of CHSLD Herron

Montreal police have launched a criminal investigation into the owner of a private long-term care home in Dorval, a suburb in the city's West Island. Thirty-one residents at the facility have died in less than one month.
It will take weeks or months before the investigation is complete, police say. Investigators were at the residence overnight, leaving Sunday morning and returning again Sunday afternoon.
"There's a lot at stake when there are families that have lost their loved ones, that are concerned about what happened to them, so we really have to take the time," said Insp. André Durocher, a spokesperson for the Montreal police (SPVM).
He said investigators from the SPVM's major crimes unit will collect various types of evidence: security camera footage, administrative documents and lists of personnel and residents. Then they will talk to family members, staff and residents to determine what happened and whether there will be criminal charges.
Quebec's coroner's office has also opened an investigation into the 31 deaths. It will determine the causes and circumstances of the deaths, and provide recommendations on how to prevent these types of deaths in the future.
The regional public health agency, known by its French acronym CIUSSS, has taken control of CHSLD Herron. Public health officials are now inspecting all private long-term care homes to ensure they are dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak properly.
The Health Ministry said that when they arrived at the end of March, most staff had already abandoned the facility where about 150 seniors live, and that conditions were dire. It took a court order, issued Wednesday, to get the residents' medical files.
The government says at least five of the deaths were linked to the novel coronavirus.
The facility is owned by Katasa Group, a company based in Gatineau, Que., owned by Samir Chowieri and his three daughters. The company runs seven elder-care facilities in the province.
In a statement, the company said its employees have made "extraordinary efforts" since the COVID-19 crisis began and their calls for help were ignored by the West Island CIUSSS.
"We hope that the attention aroused by our situation will lift the veil on the lack of support from the West Island CIUSSS for the teams working in CHSLDs," the statement said.
An official with the company, who declined to speak on the record, contested the government's version of events. The official also said public health directives requiring people to self-isolate had left the facility understaffed in the early days of the outbreak.
'The older people are neglected'
Darrel Whitehead's father died Saturday at CHSLD Herron. He'd been living at the facility for three years.
For the last two weeks, Whitehead said his father was malnourished, was not given water and was left to live in filth.
They found out last weekend that he had tested positive for COVID-19, but for a week after that, they could not get through to the residence.
Whitehead received a voicemail early Saturday morning. When he called back, he was informed that his father had died.
"The older people are neglected. They should have had priority," he told Radio-Canada. He said his father had Parkinson's disease and could not communicate verbally.

On Sunday afternoon, Lynne McVey, head of the public health agency for the western region of Montreal, said that things are improving at the residence now that it is under its management.
"We are really seeing the situation stabilize," she said. Four doctors and a team of nurses are working there, she said, and an agency employee is at the reception desk, contacting the families of those living there.
'I saw a man dead in his bed'
Even so, one social worker who volunteered at CHSLD Herron said she saw some difficult things at the residence Sunday morning.
Mandy Leonard said staffing is sparse, with only one orderly for two floors, one cleaning team and a few nurses.
"I saw a man dead in his bed. I wasn't expecting that," Leonard said. "I went to bring him his breakfast and he was dead. And it was obvious it had been a while since he died."
She said workers and residents told her things have improved a lot in the past two days.
"The people who were brought in to help are doing a great job," Leonard said. The odours of feces and of death have gone away, she said. "But we've only just established a base."
Leonard said the hardest thing was seeing isolated and confused seniors who didn't understand why they were being quarantined.
"I worked in a crisis centre for 17 years and I've seen a lot, but I've never seen anything like what I saw this morning."

By Harry Ramkhelawan One of Guyana's most prominent citizens, presently a resident of London, Ontario – Mr Chetram Singh – was the Chief Guest and Award Recipient at the 14th Annual Fund Raising Dinner and Special Recognition Award event of the Pranav Mandir held last Saturday in Etobicoke. Friends and families of Mr Singh and supporters of the Pranav Mandir numbering about 300 gathered to felicitate the Awardee and at the same time, enjoy an evening of inspiring cultural performances by students of the Pranav Heritage and Music class. Two grandchildren - Rishi Singh and Rohana Roshni Singh – along with son Dr Narendra Singh, of the honored guest spoke on his behalf and gave some interesting insights into the life of this patriarch of the family. Mr Singh himself also spoke briefly. The grandchildren disclosed that their Aja (paternal grandfather) was not too excited about his being nominated for the Recognition Award which in itself reveals an attribute of Mr Singh in not wanting to be in the limelight or seeking self promotion. The audience was told what is common knowledge to most Guyanese in the 1960s up to the early 1970s: that the name 'Chetram Singh' and the title of Hospital Administrator in Guyana were interchangeable. His was a household name.
