Chutney icon Anand Yankaran is dead.

Loop understands that Yankaran died on Monday morning from a suspected heart attack.

He had been ailing for some time following a stroke in 2008 in New York where he had migrated.

Speaking to Loop about his passing, George Singh, founder of the Chutney Soca Monarch said Yankaran last performed in 2014 in the competition.

"Anand Yankaran was a legend, an icon. He was someone in the same league as Sundar Popo. When you speak about Sundar, you speak about Anand, they carved out what is today known as Chutney and Chutney Soca. He still has songs that are played in parties up to today, we are really going to miss him, he is a great loss for Trinidad and Tobago," said Singh.

Yankaran is known for a string of hits, among them “Malineya”, “Humsa Bolaway”, “Laylo Laylo”, Zndabad Trinbago” “Gunguroo Bajay” “Indra Puri Say”, “Soch Samajh Abhiman”, “Ranga Dall”, “Bola Baba”, “Kya Kar Mai” and “Janay Maha”. His biggest hit, according to Singh is "Nanda Baba".

We will update this story as more details emerge.

God Bless You Anand Yankarran.  Those vocals only come around once in a while.  Getting goosebumps!

Bless them ??  You must be out of your bloody mind; I say good riddance to ugly, stinking rubbish ! Music, a key component of Indian culture, was significantly degraded over the years by the likes of Yankarran, Sundar Popo and that other dumb-ass idiot Terry Gajraj who somehow thinks he is a big star ! These morons never acquired any sense or understanding of Shastria Sangeet and as a result of their ignorance they are totally incapable of differentiating 'sa' from 'pa'. The junk that they put is simply repulsive and must surely be making our forefathers turn in their graves. Moreover, these jackasses created a direct link between their 'Indian music' and lewdness; no question about that ! One only needs to see the uncouth manner in which many folks gyrate and 'wine up' at weddings and parties in Guyana, Trinidad, and even here in North America; decency and modesty have gone down the toilet ! The likes of Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, etc will surely turn in their graves and vomit if they are to hear only a fraction of the garbage that is put out by these morons ...'ah drinkin me rum' and all that bilge ! These buffoons are so ignorant that they have no sense of the damage that they have done to one of the most serenely beautiful art forms the world has ever known ! These jackasses are so culturally ignorant that they do not have even the slightest inkling of the harm they have done and continue to do ! Without even realizing it, these shitheads are doing irreparable damage to people of Indian extraction; not to mention the social degradation .... which is clearly in evidence whenever we read Guyanese and Trinidadian newspapers. I am willing to bet that few, if any, of these dingbats know who folks like Ustad Shujaat Hussain Khan, Pandit Budhaditya Mukherjee, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan etc are ! On the other hand they certainly are well versed with 'ah drinkin' me rum' and other such putrid crap !

Keffer, nice piece. Expand it and submit to some Caribbean newspapers and journals. I'll add a few paragraphs if you like.

Sister, I have always taken my identity and culture very seriously; particularly when I look back at the environment from which we came. The economic progress that our people made in Guyana, Suriname, Trinidad etc. was not accidental. I can write pages and pages of what my grandparents told me about their nominal beginnings, their determination to extricate themselves from deep, despairing poverty and their long years of sacrifice and perseverance. Their ethics are deeply embedded in my family. As I grew up in a small rice farming village in Guyana I saw how destructive alcohol was, assisted now in a big way by the rubbish that these 'big stars' are putting out. I do not see the other races behaving in this ridiculously shameful way. What is even more outrageous is that I have not seen or heard any of our imams, pandits or even parents and elders come out against this rubbish ! So sad, so shameful ....

Keefer reminds me of a former GNIER by the name of Cookup.

COOKUP said that these chutney singers prostitutes the Indian songs and culture.

I person do not agree wit that. I think we West Indians evolved in our music and culture, something that was inevitable .

I am as an Indian make can enjoy original al I Dian dogs and at the same time die to hear The Yorba Singers out of Guyana.

Chief, you are perfectly free to disagree with me, however, please tell me 1) what is the depth of your knowledge/involvement in Indian music,      2) do you know what Shastriya Sangeet is ?          3) are you aware of the origin & structure of Hindustani music ?      4) have you ever listened to the lyrics of chutney songs ?          5) seriously thought about the detrimental social effect that chutney has   has had on the social fabric of the Indian communities of Guyana & T'dad ?

Soca chutney is basically drunk music concocted with inebriated hindi words incorporated with vulgar dancing which is only interrupted and performed by drunks. A mind in it's most venerable state we are all victims of this state, for those who imbibe in the spirits, alcoholic that is.

Quite apart from the evident vulgarity, we should also note that the common element of the lyrics of most chutney songs are 1) promotion of practices that have distinctly harmful social effects and 2) significant and substantial departure from the classical purity of Shastriya Sangeet.
