An extra bag containing more than 20 pounds of cocaine was Saturday afternoon intercepted at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) and prevented from being loaded on a New York-bound flight, authorities said.
Vigilant Caribbean Airlines (CAL) security spotted the bag after cross-checking the baggage with the passengers. Agents of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) were immediately summoned and they, in turn, requested the involvement of police investigators.
Officials believe that the bag, which was found at the back of the terminal building in the baggage area, was sneaked in there to be placed on Caribbean Airlines flight BW 526 which was scheduled to depart at 3:50 PM.
After the departure of the flight, investigators were expected to question several workers at the CJIA before deciding who should be subjected to further interrogation.
No passenger has been arrested.
