Whether its Diwali or IAD, they seem to have difficulty  agreeing to work together and being  harmony among the people.

As a government, a decision regarding the date had to be made, when groups cannot decide among themselves.

The minister made the right decision based on the best information available to him.

Is it a culture thing among Hindus to divide, when they don't have their own way ?

The rest of the world decided on November 11th, but the afc/apnu is such a progressive government that they stared early.

News are that a convincing majority of Hindus in Guyana did not lit diyas in a large quantities last night Nov 10/15:

"Tonight is the night" smilingly, most of our Hindus Brothers and Sisters, were able to convey.

How shameful this Coalition Government of Guyana turn out to be, a laughing stock of the over whelming  majority of Hindus of Guyana.

Wrong date! East Canje residents send signal to  Minister Ramjattan

– very few diyas lit

Hindus in East Canje, Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) are sticking to observing the festival of Diwali today. The villages of Canefield, Rose Hall and Adelphi, which traditionally are a spectacle on Diwali night had just visitors on Tuesday evening, many of whom were disappointed.

Traditionally, persons travel from New Amsterdam, the Corentyne, and as far as the West Coast of Berbice, in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) to witness the decorative lighting of Diyas in East Canje on Diwali night. However, on Tuesday night, there were less than 10 homes with lighted Diyas throughout the entire East Canje area. This could be considered a signal the Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan that he was wrong to declare Tuesday a national holiday and Diwali day.

On October 21, Minister Ramjattan announced that November 10 would be a public holiday to celebrate the Hindu festival of Deepavali. The Minister’s announcement came amid confusion among Hindu groups on the official date for the Festival of Lights.

According to Ramjattan, his decision was arrived at following consultations with various authorities on the subject, both locally and abroad, but President of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, Dr Vindhiya Persaud said that she believes that their religion is being trampled, in a high handed, dictatorial manner by the Government of Guyana. She further explained that the Sabha is very clear that Diwali is on November 11.

Meanwhile, in East Canje, villagers said they will be lighting their Diyas tonight. In New Amsterdam, only a few persons lit Diyas and the same was noted on the West Coast of Berbice.

According to Robin Sookraj, a resident of New Amsterdam, who is known for the most secular display of Diyas and rangoli designs in the town, he will also be lighting Diyas tonight.

Diwali, also called Deepavali, marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year according to the Lunar calendar. When translated, it literally means β€˜Row of Lights’. It celebrates the victory of Goodness over Evil and Light over Darkness – it ushers in the New Year.

In observance of this auspicious day, persons can be seen cleaning their homes and wearing new clothing. Deepavali is a four-day festival.

Ramjattan has done a disservice to the AFC. This will come back to haunt them. His arrogance is totally unacceptable.

Even Burnham and Hoyte were not as arrogant as Ramjattan.

Who cares.  72% of the population are NOT Hindu.  In fact with each passing day more and more Hindus are converting to Christianity.

The new moon came out last night. How is the 11th the darkest night?. Hindus are following blindly like a flock of sheep. The host of Pundits and Swamees who advised Ramjattan are correct.

One final gasp, please. Some persons have been referring to the English calendars where the final phase of the moon has been listed for the 10th November. Visibility was a mere 2%. The moon is in constant motion, (rotation on its axis), not only during the night, but also during the day. That 2% was, indeed, visible on the morning of the 10th. However, according to all Panchangs (Astrological Almanac), it became β€˜lost’ by midday of the 10th, (beginning of Amavasya), and by 6pm, it became totally β€˜lost.’ This situation existed up to 13:47hrs on the 11th when the β€˜New’ or β€˜Young’ Moon was β€˜born.’ This is confirmed by the NASA Moon Calendar. By inference, the night prior to the New Moon has to be the dark night. The night of November 10th was β€˜No Moon,’ while the night of November 11th was β€˜New Moon.’

Yours faithfully,

All these damn religious holidays coincide with the 4 seasons. I do not give too much significance to them. I was watching a documentary about the bible where Sodom and Gomarrah were debunked. It was a meterological phenomenon (the asteroid that did the damage was tracked by two amateur astronomers and recorded on a tablet). Moses did not part the Red Sea either; it was due to heavy winds at the shallow part of the sea.
