I would suggest you read the Washington Post editorial on Donald Trump. It is one of the most devastating put downs by a media house of a major politician in any country in the contemporary world.Titled, “Donald Trump is a unique threat to American democracy,” the paper dismissed Trump in the most scathing of ways that, given the paper’s influence, it is bound to cost Trump a significant number of votes
The part of the opinion I like goes like this: “He also is contemptuous of fact. Throughout the campaign, he has unspooled one lie after another and when confronted with contrary evidence, he simply repeats the lie.
It is impossible to know whether he convinces himself of his own untruths or knows that he is wrong and does not care.” There is no collection of words that is more appropriate to describe the post election deportment of the leadership of the PPP Government that was in power from 1992 to May 2015.This country is witnessing a deluge of condemnations of the actions, statements and policies of the Coalition Government by a group of leaders in another political party who, when they held the reins of power, the exercise of authority was not only autocratic and oligarchic, but bordered on semi-fascism. In what can only be a display of Trumpish depravity, this group’s denial of facts makes even Trump look like an angel.
Gail Teixeira, the PPP leader who controlled the University of Guyana as if it was her private school and was an Advisor to Presidents Jagdeo and Ramotar on governance, tells Guyanese at the moment the rule of law is in trouble.
Was the rule of law in existence when this woman was a powerful queen in the corridors of power? It was under her government, an acquitted person freed by a Judge and Jury can remain in prison indefinitely because the State can now appeal High Court acquittals in criminal cases. Freed accused who cannot find a million dollars in bail can only languish in jail.Life has a strange way of hunting and haunting those who forget the wicked deeds they have done to others. Most definitely, we will see Teixeira’s former Cabinet colleagues before High Court Juries after the results of the forensic audits are thoroughly sifted through. Would it not be poetic justice when some of Teixeira’s colleagues are freed only to find that the State has appealed and bail denied to them?
As we are on the topic of the forensic audits, the same czarina told the press that the forensic audits are witch-hunting by the Coalition Government.Ms. Teixeira only found out the meaning of the rule of law now that she and her fellow monarchs are out of power. Ms. Teixeira recently found out the definition of witch-hunt a year after her party lost power.When she was Advisor to Jagdeo and Ramotar, Ms. Teixeira and the rule of law had broken down and witch-hunts were being pursued like mangoes falling from a tree. Ms. Teixeira must have been in a deep coma.
Was Ms. Teixeira not in power when President Jagdeo sued this newspaper and columnist for libel and legal history was made when the case went to trial eleven months after Jagdeo filed his affidavit? That is a record for Guyana and probably the world. Does a libel case come up in any country eleven months after papers were filed? Where was the rule of law when Teixeira was Governance Advisor and Jagdeo was President and Justice Bovell-Drakes had his appointment held up because, according to Jagdeo, Bovell-Drakes was a member of the youth arm of the PNC? Where was the rule of law under Teixeira when the acting Chief Justice and Chancellor, by an edict of President Jagdeo, were awarded full salaries and with full benefits on retirements, but the same right denied to the acting Chief Education Officer, Geneveive Whyte-Nedd?
The most dangerous human beings on Planet Earth can be found in the PPP. These are people who trampled on countless citizens of this country, in the process violating their rights in the most egregious ways. They walk the streets of Guyana, as Jagdeo did at the Stabroek MarketSquare when the vendors were evicted, looking for converts. But what about even one apology over one mistake? Not even a half of an apology has been uttered.In the midst of this Trumpish indecency, the leader of the PPP is still wearing his hubristic garment. When asked for details about a PPP leader threatening a foreign diplomat, he said, “What’s in the cup, stays in the cup.”
