With the deepest shock and regret, I announce to the Board the passing of Sankar Nirahu. Sankar was a well known businessman/Broker who lent his time and considerable resources to the AFC and to the cause of Guyana.

We are a poorer society for his loss. I was privileged to call him a friend.

He is one of countless Guyanese who quietly worked in the shadows for a Guyana where blacks and Indians would have an equal stake in the future of their country free of ethnic and racial strife.

He lived his ideals and political principles every day.

The Alliance For Change (AFC) said it is in a state of deep mourning on the passing of one of its foremost warriors.
β€œSankar Nirahu, one of the earliest members of the Party and a founding member of the New York/New Jersey AFC Chapter passed peacefully in his sleep on January 31, 2015 (Saturday). Nirahu was a fearless champion and fighter for a new and better Guyana, a Guyana that provides equal rights and justice to all Guyanese,” AFC said yesterday in a release.
AFC said that Nirahu worked tirelessly to promote the cause of the AFC and a better Guyana in the New York/New Jersey areas and in the wider diaspora. β€œHe mobilized and raised funding and donations for the party and ensured that grassroots party workers had the best equipment to gather and distribute information about the work the party is doing in promoting change. As recent as December 2014, he made donations to young activists in the AFC to help them gather information and spread the AFC’s message.”
Party Leader, Khemraj Ramjattan, said that he was in a state of deep shock. β€œThis is a massively hurtful blow to the party. Sankar was leading the work for the AFC in North America and his loss will be felt by the party. His untimely passing will make our work in this campaign so much harder as he would have contributed so much.”
β€œHe will want us to band together and carry on the fight and while we are in mourning, we will do so. In the 2011 campaign we lost our founder sister Sheila Holder, now in 2015 we have lost Sankar. We must continue the campaign for change, for a better Guyana in their names and in the interest of all Guyanese. Their examples must inspire us,” Ramjattan added.
The party said that Nirahu who is known as β€œSanko” held the distinct and fitting honour of being the first person to be issued with an AFC membership card. β€œHis untiring work energized and inspired his party colleagues and countless others. Unfailingly passionate, he visited Guyana frequently and grounded with his colleagues on the ground and joined with them in door to door walkabouts and other activities.”
An evening of reflection on the life of Nirahu will be held on Friday in Queens, New York with cremation set for Saturday.
Nirahu leaves to mourn his mom, sister, brother, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Here was an honest Indian businessman who never sought the limelight and was steadfast in his dedication to racial equality.

He had all opportunity to be a suck up to the PPP and to profit well from PPP connections but he chose his principles first.
