Acting Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn says it is never the police’s intention to kill innocent Guyanese.

The minister was at the time referring to the shooting incident on Hadfield street over the weekend which claimed the life of Dameon Belgrade.

Benn related that the police have a mandate to protect the citizens and stressed that this must be done at all cost.

The acting home affairs minister has refuted reports that the police is on a crusade to kill innocent civilians.

He is of the view that such statements are reckless and aimed at creating mischief.

Benn says he met with the top brass of the police to discuss the shooting and that an investigation has been launched into the matter.

Meanwhile, Benn reminded that Guyana is not the only country with such problems.

Dameon Belgrade was killed after being hit by a stray bullet fired by the police.

At the time of his demise he was outside the white castle fish shop on Hadfield Street.

Its unfair the paint the whole police force with the same brush as the few rogue officers, their actions were condemned by all and sundry, and they will face necessary legal sanctions

The GPF had always been known for its heavy handed approach even in the simpliest of situations. Whether they set out to shoot people intentionally or not, is anyone's guess. What is known though, is some of these guys can be hasty in their approach which can sometimes lead to fatalities.
