Many Guyanese feel at this stage as if they are playing minor roles in a Greek tragedy where the major actors are unable to understand what is taking place. This play has gone on far too long, the third Act, or is it the thirtieth, is boring and predictable and the leading actors on both sides have nothing new to say and are tired, bitter and uninspired. They do not realise that everyone is desperately looking for a new scenario, for a new theme, for a new play.

But the thing has become a tragic farce and there is no plot left, only themes inherited from the past. The players are going through the motions, the lines never change.

DEAR EDITOR, When President Ramotar assumed office three years ago, he pledged that there would be no compromise on integrity in public office or performance by him or his ministers. He also promised to ensure that the public interest and the protection of the citizens would be paramount, but like all his other empty promises, these also fell by the wayside. While his promises may have served his narrow political interests, they are not serving the broader national interest above and beyond everything else. Because the general election is less than three months away, all the actions of the president and his cabinet are not driven by what is best for the nation, but what is best for the PPP to be re-elected.  The recent allocation of house lots to residents is an election gimmick aimed at fooling the people that the PPP cabal cares about them. We want the people to know that the regime only cares about them whenever there are elections, but as soon as the elections are over, the PPP will abandon them again for their rich friends. We believe that the positions of President and ministers have always been a selfless task to serve the people, and one should feel humble to have been granted such prestigious positions through the will of the people and the grace of God. However, this is not the case with the PPP. President Ramotar is a big failure, in that he has not served the people well during the last three years. Although there have been damming allegations against government officials, over the past decade and a half, neither Jagdeo nor Ramotar has ever disciplined anyone This election period should not be an easy one for the PPP. The people can no longer rest assured that the president and his cabinet have both the courage and personal fortitude to do what is right for the country whenever it is necessary to do so, regardless of the consequences. They have shirked their responsibility to the people and the office they have sworn to uphold and therefore should not be re-elected on May 11. Gone are the days when a government may feel it does not need to give account for its actions or would undermine public confidence bestowed on their officials without consequences. The PPP cabal would have us return to the old ways, but that will not be the case with a strong and powerful opposition. The changes brought about today by the majority opposition in Parliament in ensuring accountability and good governance are of greater importance now than ever before. The old standards have changed and have given way to new demands and expectations by a younger generation. The shift in conscience and consciousness of the people is not without its shockwaves, as they see decisions being taken by the majority opposition that are unusually bold and strident in upholding the ideals for which the people voted so overwhelmingly. If elected to office on May 11, an AFC/APNU coalition has pledged to uphold the values and morals of good governance. May God continue to guide the deliberations of the opposition on the nation’s behalf and may God bless and guide all Guyanese to elect an AFC/APNU government that will govern in the interest of all. It is true they have done a disservice to Guyana. It is true Guyana never realized her potentials. But explain to me why 90% of the voters still vote for the two main parties?

TKBABU, if you can't understand that, then you shouldn't be in politics.
