The Akawini horror story begins with the complete lack of or rather intentional under education or miseducation of the children at primary level as there is no secondary education available.
There is one trained or qualified teacher for a primary school of 191 with 7 untrained teachers in total. The highest mark a for the entire community at the national grade six means was 392 out of a possible 580. Only 14% of the grade six students metriculated for Charity secondary. Of those who qualified for Charity Secondary 66% did not attend and have now dropped out of school because their parents they can't afford to send them or keep them there.
Of those that attend secondary school 0% yes 0% passed.CSEC.
70% to 80% of those who pass for secondary school drop out before 8th grade and return to their village.
There they remain until they are old enough to leave the village to take up menial low level employment in the gold fields.
Just to put this in perspective Akawini is in the same region as Abrams Zuil, the school where the top student sat 18 subjects with 16 grade ones as a matter of fact it's less than 80 miles away.
No a single student from Akawini has gained sufficient marks at grade six to qualify for the three top schools in region 2 for over fifteen years.
We are proving these young people with third rate education so that they become a permanent underclass in 2015.
The outhouse in the pic below is the wash room facilities for the kindergarten pupils.
A final note if that is possible no one in the villages of Akawini and a Wakapow has passed any subject at CSEC for years.
