A spurned cane-cutter stabbed his 19-year old ex-girlfriend to death at around 19.00 hrs on Saturday after trailing her and a male friend to a Rosignol, West Bank Berbice restaurant.
Shazina Mahamad of Lot 53 Edinburgh Scheme, East Bank Berbice was reportedly stabbed several times by her former lover while she was standing in front of the Yang Yi Chinese Restaurant.
She had reportedly gone there with another male friend, who was in the restaurant purchasing a meal when the jilted man carried out his brutal assault.
Shazina was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where she succumbed.
The alleged killed fled the scene but was arrested yesterday morning at his Shieldstown, West Coast Berbice home.
According to the police, Shazina Mahamad was involved in an argument with the cane harvester, with whom she is reported to have ended a relationship.
During the argument, he brandished a knife and stabbed her multiple times. A tattered tee-shirt that the teen was wearing indicated that she was also stabbed in the back.
Kaieteur News understands that Shazina had journeyed to Risognol to collect a phone and had decided to go to the restaurant with a male friend, Mitra Sukdeo, and his sister.
Sukdeo told Kaieteur News that he suspected that the killer had trailed them to the restaurant.
Sukdeo stated that he was inside the restaurant with his sister when he heard Shazina screaming outside. He then saw the teen clutching at her stomach and also observed a man running from the scene.
He said that Shazina subsequently collapsed and was rushed to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital. She was later transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she died.
Sukdeo later told investigators that Shazina had revealed she and the suspect had once shared a relationship, but that it ended some time ago.
The owner of the restaurant recalled that around 19:00 hours that night she noticed the teen standing at the restaurant’s gate. According to the woman, a male friend who accompanied Shazima came in and ordered a meal.
“Everything happened so quick. I just see her standing there then this other guy come up and I see like they talk lil bit and then he start stabbing her. Even the other customer that was sitting on the table outside said he didn’t hear her scream or anything.”
According to the woman, the suspect quickly ran away and it was a group of public spirited citizens who assisted the injured young woman to the hospital.
When Kaieteur News visited the slain teen’s home, her father, Shafike Mahamad, and her seven sisters were in a state of shock.
Recalling the last time he saw his young daughter, Shafike Mahamad said that earlier that day she had left to visit a friend at Rosignol, West Bank Berbice; about 45 minutes away from where she lived.
Mahamad said that he received a phone call that his daughter had been stabbed and was in a critical condition at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. When he arrived at the institution, doctors were treating his daughter but she died at around 23:00 hours that night.
The father said he was told that his daughter and a male friend went to purchase a meal at a restaurant.
“This guy (the killer) know she. He does comes here (their house) one-one time. He is not her boyfriend. He like she but she nah like he.”
Attempting to explain the events which may have led to his daughter’s death, Mahamad said: “like he (the suspect) go and see she with the boy and think is she boyfriend and he mussy vex about it.”
As he fought to hold back tears, Mahamad showed this publication the navy blue shirt his daughter was wearing at the time of the incident.
Kaieteur News observed that the piece of clothing had several punctures on both sides. Though it had been laundered, a substance appearing to be blood was still apparent.
“Them doctors said she had a lot of stabs. All the holes that you see here, that’s where the knife went through. The doctors them tell me that she get bore in she back too,” he explained as he held the shirt.
The man described his daughter as a loving, easy going person who always had a smile to share.
There have been at least ten murders for the year and Shazina Mahamad is the third female victim for January, 2015.
