Because she has is the appointed "Minister of Amerindian" affairs she knows best. She stood by when that PPP foot stool Nigil Dharamlal chastised our leaders like school children because the PPP knows best. Not this knee bender decided to berate the agency that was there in the trenches fighting for our people when she was still groveling for a handout from the PPP. Apparently, one only needs to become a PPP member to receive the benefaction of supreme wisdom!

Sukhai slams EU’s awarding of project to Amerindian group

June 2, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

By awarding the Amerindian People Association (APA) a 150,000 Euros project in front of the National Toshaos Council, the European Union has breached the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Pauline Sukhai, Minister of Amerindian Affairs

Pauline Sukhai, Minister of Amerindian Affairs

This notion was expressed by Pauline Sukhai, Minister of Amerindian Affairs during a recent press conference. The Minister was at the time updating the media on her recent engagement at the UN forum, where the APA called on Government to slow the EU funded Voluntary Partnership Agreement of the Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade process (FLEGT).
Sukhai said she believes the Non-Governmental Organization is probably confused about its objectives, since it is executing agency of the same FLEGT project it wants to see slow down.

In April, the European Union provided the APA with a grant to strengthen the active participation of civil society in the Voluntary Partnership Agreement of the Forest Law Enforcement Governance and Trade process (FLEGT).

The aim of this project is to support the active participation of the Amerindian communities in the FLEGT Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) development process in a manner that supports the national roadmap and builds synergies with the ongoing efforts of the National Technical Working Group, the coordinating body for EU- FLEGT in Guyana.
The VPA aims to promote sustainable forest management by further promoting forest legality and securing access to European markets for legally-harvested and sustainable Guyanese forest products.
This specific project will build the capacity of identified Amerindian Village Councils and villagers, indigenous peoples’ organizations and civil society to become actively engaged in the FLEGT VPA discussions at the local and national levels, as well as to enable their effective participation in the development and implementation of the FLEGT VPA in Guyana.

According to Sukhai, this is not the first time the APA has called for the slowing down of the project. She enlightened that the APA wrote to the EU requesting same even after receiving a “huge chunk of funds to proceed with it.” The Minister finds the APA’s position on this matter contradictory.
The Minister lashed out at the European Union for granting the APA the project even though the NTC, the democratically elected body to represent Amerindians, had also applied to execute same.

Lady, lay off t he soup and look to the example of your ancestor. He did not bend the knees and look to becoming a fat patrician. He went where no one went before and did what no one did since....fight for our people as an Amerindian thinking for Amerindians and not for some proxy Amerindian meeting the needs of a corriupt party

She argued that the APA is a third party to the elected Amerindian leaders in this country and therefore should not have been granted the funds to execute monitoring and awareness sessions under the FLEGT.
“And here it is the EU turning a blind eye to the NTC who is the legitimate representatives of the Amerindian peoples. They were elected through a democratic process. NTC applied and was refused and the EU awarded it to a third party. That is a breach of the UNDRIP,” she said.

Sukhai explained the UNDRIP speaks of Indigenous people being in charge; and must be the one determining what they want to do and not third party. Nonetheless, the EU awarded the grant to a third party that is not responsible ad cannot empower all Amerindians.

My friend Vibert De Souza from Moruka must be bemused these days.

The PPP regime appointed Vibert as its first Minister of Amerindian Affairs in 1992. Vibert didn't last long as minister. Mind you, he was a longtime PPP activist like Pauline Sukhai.

I can imagine Vibert telling himself that Pauline is doing what it takes to keep her job, even if it means cutting the throats of fellow Amerindians.

My friend Vibert is not the throat-cutting type though he still has a soft spot for the PPP.

It good when a government gets a bruised nose every now and then. It keeps them in check.

They left Vibert without furniture for his office for months. What was his budget again when Amerind did not count and they wanted to steal their lands for the lumber and mining companies and rewritten the Amerind d act? You would know that if you are his friend. The PPp disrespected im even from beginning because he had a mind for  his people.

Thanks for reminding us. The Amerindian community was ecstatic when Vibert became their subject minister. He was humble and approachable and willing and able to help his people. The government minister's position didn't swell his head.

Pauline Sukhai was a simple young woman when I knew her pre-1992.

Based on anecdotes I've gotten from mutual friends in Guyana, however, she's now dressed with arrogance. Also, my wife visited Guyana two years ago and was invited to an event on the Essequibo Coast where Pauline was the chief guest. My wife said Pauline looked at her straight in the eye and failed to acknowledge her presence. Now, both of them were in the WPO Central Committee in the 1980s and they got along exceedingly well. I guess power makes people forget old friends.

And you wonder why people are beginning to think the PPP is worse than LFSB on his worse day if even their minions   are deluded into calling those opposed to their crooked behavior the enemy?

FYI, Billy, my wife abandoned politics shortly after marrying me in 1985, of her own free will. I stayed on as an activist until May 1992.

I don't know what you mean by "enemy."

I never regarded any political party in Guyana is my enemy. And, criticizing the ruling PPP today doesn't mean the PPP is my enemy.

I brought my wife into the conversation to show a simple example of Pauline Sukhai's hauteur. The two were close comrades, and Pauline knew my wife dropped out of politics long ago. So, the thought of any association with an enemy couldn't be on her mind.

Now, in case you're wondering what my wife was doing at that event. Her father is a retired PPP parliamentarian on the Essequibo Coast, much respected today. He was invited to the opening of a project at one of the lakes. He took my wife along for the outing. She was not a participant, merely a visitor.
