Last week, France was confirmed as the world’s most visited country. Here’s where to go if you wish to avoid the tourist hordes

South America

Least visited country*: Guyana (177,000), according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation report

Often classified as part of the Caribbean, this country is part of the South American continent. It’s known for its virgin rainforests, political volatility, cricketing prowess (Clive Lloyd, the successful West Indies captain is one of the country's best known sons), and its fading colonial capital, Georgetown.

If you want to go: See Telegraph Travel’s beginner’s guide to Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana

*Note that no figures were supplied for French Guiana

Region’s most visited: Probably Brazil. No figures for 2013 were available for the UN report, but there were almost 5.7m in 2012, slightly more than Argentina – and interest in the World Cup would probably have boosted the numbers further.

Guyana major source of income is not from tourism. Our Eco-tourism has great promises, but moving at a slow pace due to the lack of a better airport. We're not seeing the triple effect in the tourist economy because two pieces of the puzzles are missing. That is the CJIA expansion and the Hydro Power Plant.

Good morning, GNI!

You don't need airport to attract cruise ships. Most of the 177,000 is probable Guyanese expats visiting relatives, attending weddings or funerals. Because of Chikengunya, I would not visit Guyana at this time.

And if you mean another fly by night PPP owned airline you are dreaming.

Guyana will NOT get a major brand name airline unless it comes up with revenue guarantees and other market development programs.  JetBlue is focusing on the Caribbean and the more lucrative Central and South  American countries. They will NOT fly into a country which allows legions of fly by night airlines to destroy revenue yield.

Given that the only significant route into GEO is out of JFK only JetBlue is likely to service GEO.

I suggest that other Caribbean islands probably have more of a problem with this disease.  The highest risk places are Haiti, DR, St Maarten, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Dominica.   The US residents with this virus have picked it up in those locations.

Given that Guyana has relatively little exposure to those islands there will be only isolated cases.  Malaria should be your greater concern.  Coastal Guyana has very heavy exposure to the interior where malaria is a virtual epidemic.

That's why Guyana will never develop tourism. Which brand name carrier with the ability to attract people other than Guyanese will fly to GEO if they must battle against fly by nites killing yields, and eventually themselves, with unsustainable air fares.
