Harbour Bridge to reopen for light traffic at 6 pm today
September 3 2019
The Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) will reopen today at 6 PM for light vehicular traffic, General Manager Rawlston Adams announced at a press conference this morning.
Adams at the press conference explained that cars, minibuses, motorcycles and small canters will be allowed to use the bridge. Heavy machinery and trucks will not be accommodated at this time.
Currently, motorcycles and bicycles users are permitted to use the bridge even as repairs continue after a barge slammed into the bridge early yesterday morning putting it out of commission.
At present, marine traffic through the retractor span of the 41-year-old bridge has been halted. The vessels are likely to cross at the next retraction which is scheduled for Thursday.
A tug and barge hit the DHB early yesterday morning, causing extensive damage requiring millions in repairs and disrupting travel between West and East Demerara.
The tug, a Panamanian vessel, apparently drifted from Grove/Diamond on the East Bank Demerara and its crew belatedly issued a distress call.
Commuters have been forced to utilize speedboats to get across the river for work and school. The operations today have reportedly been smooth thus far.
