BREAKING NEWS- HGP Nightly News- Mystery surrounds a discovery at Enmore Sugar Estate, where huge heavy pieces of hard material, weighing close to a ton, were discovered in sugar cane punts covered in sugar cane about to be dumped into a grinder.

The object, seen here, appear to have been deliberately planted. They had the potential to do serious damage to grinding equipment at the sugar factory.

Guysuco personnel who operated the lift that overturn the contents of punts into the grinder grew suspicious of the weight of the punt and checked its content and discovered the weighty objects.

The factory manager at enmore estate could not be reached for comment.

There seems to be an organized effort to make the Granger government look bad.

Why does crime got much worse after the PPP lost the election ?

Cane cutters are paid by the weight of the cane in the punt, they can investigate to know who fill that punt and sometimes done by more than one person. That type of cheating been going on for ages, even in the PNC days. The cane cutters need a raise, they need more money , all gov't official getting raise so why don't they???Stop making this Political, it's a criminal act.

Rama,

Why are you blaming the PPP.

T is offering a hypothesis that because of the alleged disruptive history of the PPP in opposition (circa 1960s), the recent spate of crimes may have an author.

All the crimes after the election and before were committed by blacks.

It's been mentioned several times that if Blacks are employed by Indians to kill both Blacks and Indians it does not mean that these Blacks are owned by the PPP.

It also follows the same logic of the alleged disruptive nature of what is being reported. The disruptive examples cited are that economic disobedience by rice farmers or cane cutters (a notion that I will also challenge) and now the murders that are not dissimilar to the ones following the Mash 2002 jail break.

Blame the clueless Ramjattan. He is in charge.

This does not add any value to this discussion, and the motive for this line of thinking can only be described as mischievous.

I recognize your point, kp, but whichever canecutter[s] placed that big rock in that punt certainly didn't think about his/their future. That boulder would have wrecked the knives, causing a delay in replacement, back up of other punts, loss of sucrose content in the canes awaiting processing, etc. Possibly unavailable days too, you know what I mean. It was a senseless act.

I don't see a future for Uitvlugt Estate unless some drastic rationalization takes place, you know what I mean?

Uitvlugt Estate was the place of employment of my great grandfather from Rajahstan who was indentured there in 1881. His son, my grandfather, worked there until retirement in 1960. My father worked there from 1947 to 1986. And my sister worked in the pay office and DDL office from 1975 to 1999. So, for 118 straight years my family worked at Uitvlugt Estate. It was one of the best sugar estates in bygone years.

Would something that size make it to the knives without being detected?

In my field I do not believe numbers until I see the backup workpapers.  They should publish the findings with all the supporting numbers.

Holy crap Gil, then you should know the guy who took away me WC gal in the 60s.

Please don't give too much details, me wife start collecting OAS today and she getting she own credit card for our travels.

Cane punts have numbers that relates back to the gang that loaded them.

The cane gang might know and must see the metal weight before start loading. Investigation should easily prove  the source of this destructive act.

Unlike PPP members who  placed candles in cane fields in the 60s to start fires, this is an easier link to identify its source.

Simple investigation,no DNA needed.

Not likely but possibly, depending on the alertness of the foreman or whether the canes were sufficiently dispersed along the conveyor belt.

1990s: 11.2 tons of sugar cane produced 1 ton sugar. Higher sucrose content due partly to better drainage and irrigation.

In 1993, GuySuCo incurred employment costs of US$220 per ton of sugar.

In 1995-1997, production cost was US$0.23 per pound sugar.

In 1998, production cost was US$0.22 per pound sugar.

Gafar writes: "In 1990, the PNC government was prepared to privatize the sugar industry, but it did not follow through. However, the PPP/Civic government assured the sugar workers that it would not privatize the industry. This decision is based on political considerations, and not on the economic conditions of the industry. There is need to rationalize the industry, close some mills, and shed some labor to make the industry competitive and viable. It should be noted that the number of sugar factories has been reduced from 8 in 1990 to 6 in 1996, with the concentration of production shifting from Demerara to Berbice."

Upon making checks, head of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers’ Union (GAWU) Komal Chand has confirmed that there had been attempts to sabotage sugar operations at the Enmore Sugar Estate, an entity of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCO).

The attempt to damage the factory's equipment has come at a time when government is trying desperately to keep the highly indebted sugar industry afloat pending a definitive course of action based on findings and recommendations by a Commission of Inquiry.

Last week reports surfaced that a heavy metal object had been placed among sugar cane stalks ready to be dumped over into grinders that will crash the cane.

When asked for an update on the matter and whether there was any truth to the report Chand told Demerara Waves Monday August 17, “Yes, yes, there was a boulder in the punt.”

He said however that, “It is very, very difficult to find out who did it.” The long standing sugar workers representative opined that the item placed in the punt, “was so heavy that it had to have been placed there by more than one person.”

Chand had called for an investigation into the sabotage act stating that the move by the culprit or culprits would further harm the ailing sugar sector.

â€œWe condemn any attempt to destroy or hinder production at the factory,” he told this news agency. He charged that, “At the end of the day, the main victims of any sabotage will be the workers, who have been home for weeks awaiting harvesting.”

Chand had said that the attempts were “totally unacceptable,” and called for the investigation. He said he would be making checks to find out what progress has been made with the probe

Thanks for the update, Pointy. Glad to see Komal calling a spade a spade. Attempted sabotage it was, by people who don't think much about their future.
