Mahatma Gandhi's ashes have been stolen and the word 'traitor' scrawled over a poster of him at an Indian memorial on his 150th birthday.

The remains were taken from the site in central India where Gandhi's remains have been kept since his assassination by a Hindu extremist in 1948, when he was 78.

The thieves also painted the word 'traitor' on a poster of the leader who used peaceful protests to secure Indian independence from the British Empire in 1947.

Some Hindu fundamentalists perceive Gandhi as a traitor for his belief in unity with Muslims, this despite him being a devout Hindu.
