The Ministry of Natural Resources yesterday said that 13 dredges and one dragger found to be operating illegally in the Kaieteur National Park (KNP) have been confiscated.

A release from the ministry said that an interdiction exercise was carried out at an area near the Amatuk Falls, Potaro/Siparuni where a total of 13 dredges and a dragger were found operating illegally.

“These were confiscated and removed, the mining camps dismantled and all equipment including an excavator taken to the Mines Station at Mahdia. The owners of the seized equipment are to visit the Mines Station for further information”, the release said.

The release added that the government has moved to halt illegal mining activities that have been on the increase in and around the KNP.

“Stakeholder reports corroborated by surveillance footage had raised alarm about the increasing number of miners setting up illegal operations and the negative effects these will have on the environment. Amidst these concerns, the Government, with support from the Joint Services, acted decisively to address the issue and safeguard the area from further damage”, the release said.

During the operation, Police Special Constable Akeem Hyles, who was a part of the team, tragically lost his life when the boat in which he was travelling capsized in the dangerous waters of the Potaro River.

The release said that despite the tragedy, the contingent of Guyana Police Force and Guyana Defence Force ranks and officers persevered resulting in a successful operation.

“While the Government is keen on supporting miners to improve their livelihoods, they are encouraged to carry out their activities in ways that are safe, sustainable and in compliance with laws and regulations. Rogue miners who fail to comply will face the full force of the law”, the release added.

Looks like the PNC encouraged the miners to destroy the environment. Back in PPP time the miners hated the govt as laws were enforced. Now that they have a corrupt anti environment govt in power the miners will push the envelope as they know the PNC will look the other way.

Read the response to Django above and educate yourself about the pressure by Norway to remove the funding from the hands of the govt. The cease order was a direct impact from Norway cracking down on govt.
