Preliminary voters list at 567,125

Posted By Staff Writer On February 19, 2015 @ 5:20 am In Local News | No Comments

The Preliminary List of Electors (PLE) has grown by over 75,000 since the 2011 general election and the projected COST of the 2015 poll could be well over the $2.5 billion spent in 2011.

The Guyana Elections Commission held a press conference yesterday at Cara Lodge, Georgetown, to UPDATE the media on the current claims and objections period that will end on Sunday, February 22, 2015.

It gave the current size of the PLE as 567,125.

There is no way a country of 744,884 people can have 567,125 voters and growing. It is impossible. This means 76% of the country's population are eligible voters.

The electoral rolls of most countries generally hovers around 45-50% of general population.

The electorate of Guyana has to be in the viscinity of 335,197 to 372,442

simply wrong!

however, it is the % increase over 4 years that is troubling

A big portion of that 75,000 increase is attributable to a diligent registration campaign by APNU countrywide, especially in urban strongholds.

The 2012 census preliminary report shows that the combined population of Georgetown, Linden and New Amsterdam was 162,969 in 2012. For selfish political reasons, President Ramotar withheld the final report which would include race and age distribution.

Since 2012 the population above 18 years [voting age] increased. It is estimated that well over 60 percent of the population is above 18 years old. APNU's registration exercise concentrated on youths who would be eligible to vote.

APNU has really been working hard on the ground, with David Granger leading the charge personally. He is hardly in his office.

The AFC stepped up its registration of voters too.

According to the CIA WORLD FACTBOOK, Guyana's population in 2014 was 735,554.

Of that total 522,058 or 70.97 percent were above 15 years of age. Subtract a few percentage points [for the 15-17 age group] from that 70.97 percent and you get a fair estimate of the number of eligible voters.

Remember, GECOM has released only the preliminary list of voters. There is a claims and objections period during which individuals and parties can object to suspected fictitious names by providing proof.

After those names are weeded out, GECOM will publish the final list of voters.

Meanwhile, as Dr Surujbally says, GECOM will not be anybody's whipping boy.

Were they not registering age 16 and above? I read that on a notice from GECOM. If so that number is statistically correct.

AFC had clearly indicated that it-AFC will not merge with any other political group.

Perhaps now, one may wonder what it has done a few days ago with the PNC.

Will your PPP/C refrain from using their friends private residences / mansions as polling stations? This is where stuffed ballot boxes can be used to switch for the desired results.

The one good thing about the Alliance for Democracy and National Unity is, they will not need to duplicate their representation at the polling stations; a manpower problem in the last election.

I noticed several of my American relatives on that list alone. There is no mechanism for purging them from the list outside of a house-to-house registration exercise. I don't think it's even legal to purge a non-resident elector from the rolls outside of such an exercise.

Did the PPP ever indicate they were gonna tief what they have before Jagdeo got into power?  Noooo

The PPP had stated clearly they are for the working man

Perhaps now, one may wonder WTF.
