When you frame a discussion on relationship with race identification you assert a basic position - I am coming from a purely race perspective. Nohing else matters.
Even from a race perspective, the "Indian" that is being talked about in Guyana is not Indian at all. Indian as a race includes Muslims, Untouchables, Sikhs and so on in addition to Hindus. I t also includes Brahmins as well as Chatris and other Hindus like the Untouchables.
I've been watching the PBS series "Indian Summer" and you see the machinations in the 1930s and the impact on the "Indians". The Brahmins and Rajputs wanted no truck with untouchables. The Muslims were not to be trusted. And so on and so on.
This is why when Guyanese of Indian origin speak of being not an Indian (though they clearly are, even if dark-skinned) but of Guyanese, they are not decrying their Indian origin. They are merely saying that as a Madrasi or Muslim or a lower (sic) caste they are paying cognizance to how an Indian (Brahmins and upper caste) treat another Indian (Muslim, Sikhs, Madrasis and Untouchables).
so it's time to quit this dialog of someone claiming to be Guyanese and not Indian. Aren't we all Guyanese?
