Former President Bharrat Jagdeo

[www.inewsguyana.com– The Leadership of the of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) is currently mulling over a petition signed by over six thousand residents of Regions 5 and 6 which requested that Former President Bharrat Jagdeo be the Party’s Prime Ministerial candidate in the upcoming elections.

This was confirmed by General Secretary of the Party, Clement Rohee who told a press conference on Tuesday, February 17 that the Party received the petition but had requested some clarification.

Rohee explained that this clarification has since been provided and the petition was submitted to the executives of the PPP.

When asked about a possible response to the petition, Rohee hinted that a response may be given to the petitioners on the Party’s campaign trail. He however noted that no date has been set for the Party to officially launch its elections campaign.

This petition comes shortly after a writ was filed in the High Court, challenging the constitution reform that limits the President to two terms in office.

The petition, a copy of which iNews has acquired, states that the residents want Jagdeo to be the Prime Minister with direct responsibilities for the Ministries of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

According to the petition, “Former President Bharrat Jagdeo is in his prime. He has proven track record of success and it is a tragedy that he is not being utilized to the fullest.”

The petition further stated that Jagdeo is the only person capable to pulling the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) and the entire agricultural sector out of the current crisis that it is in.

Despite these moves to bring Jagdeo back into the political sphere, the Former President has made it clear that he is not interested in running for any political office.
