This is why the prison is so overcrowded. The legal system was broken since under the PPP. Granger needs to fix it now. 

Magistrate Leron Daly jailed Rohan Chand for nine months for stealing cigarettes. No fine was imposed. No community service ordered. This sentence comes two weeks after one of the world's worst prison fires by inmates burnt down the central prison and the staff club in Guyana. After the July 9 arson there was consensus in the society, including the government leaders, that jail for non-violent crimes and unrealistic bail would be reviewed.

He should be jailed for being stupid and narrow-minded. So, what happens when criminals with more serious crimes come in front of him? Will he send them to jail? If he does, where will they be housed? Rohan Chand should have been given the opportunity to pay a fine or do community service...like cleaning the drains or helping with the garbage situation.

It's this type of insane sentencing that creates the over crowding in the prisons. An 18 year old larkee with no record was given 3 years imprisonment for leaving the Skeldon shores to Surinam without a permit.

I agree with Mitwah. This man should be fined for his offense. Many poor people are being imprisoned for petty crimes that Granger wouldn't think to pardoned because he is a bloody racist.
