A secret deal for which a Chinese bank is putting US$138 million (G$27.6 billion) has been signed with a Chinese company to expand the countryโs lone international airport, but the deal was not made public by the Guyana government.
The Jamaica Observer newspaper reported yesterday that China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) signed the deal last Friday to expand the Cheddi Jagan International Airport.
The Guyana government has said nothing of the deal.
The Jamaican newspaper quoted CHEC as saying that the China Exim Bank will fund the construction of a modern terminal building and the extension of the runway by 1,066 metres to reach a total of 3,336 metres at the airport located in Timehri.
The company was also quoted as saying that China Exim is providing US$138 million ($11.9 billion) in financing.
CHEC is involved in infrastructure projects in Jamaica.
