Dear Editor,
Reference is made to M. Maxwell’s letter (KN Feb 14). While Maxwell is no lover of the PPP, his advice to those managing the affairs of the PPP should be taken seriously. Not everyone who makes critical comments or critiques of the PPP is an enemy. Constructive criticism is often more valued than laudatory praises.
The PPP’s electoral prospect is indeed dimming and the party needs to examine the reasons and take corrective measures. Otherwise, the party could very well see itself out of office come next election and its supporters without any protection as happened during the era of the dictatorship.
What is happening to the PPP is somewhat similar to what happened to the UNC in Trinidad. When the UNC got into office in November 1995, the party governed well, initially, but began drifting away from its base, ignoring supporters, alienating loyalists and hard working activists, embracing political entrepreneurs and shady investors, and eventually became immersed in corruption scandals.
The base did not like how Panday was managing the party and his embracing of the opportunists and choosing his successor while ignoring the membership who wanted the successor democratically. When Panday was asked to return to the base and put a stop to the corruption, he told the complainants to go to the police and those who don’t like how the party was being run to leave and form their own party. When the complainants went to the police, Panday found himself being charged for corruption.
And when those who were dissatisfied with how Panday managed party business left, Panday called them nimakharams. Instead of humbling himself and apologizing and paying heed to polls showing the anger of supporters, he gambled with elections to sideline his opponents within the party. He lost office in December 2001 never to return.
The PPP executives need to study the UNC example and learn from its lessons as well as from the advice being tendered by Maxwell. The party cannot afford to allow old enmity among former colleagues to linger. It is not in the party’s interest. Democratize party affairs and listen to supporters.
It will soon be three months after the elections. The PPP urgently needs to investigate why former supporters just abandoned the party for the AFC, why key activists and leaders left the party, and what can be done to bring them back. The party’s rural supporters are looking forward to meet with President Ramotar to air their grievances.
The elections showed that certain individuals in the PPP cannot be dismissed as nobodies. Clearly, Moses Nagamootoo showed himself to be worth a lot to the party in terms of voters. When he left, he took four seats with him plus the Speaker’s position. The PPP cannot afford that loss as has been shown since the elections. The party needs to have reconciliation with those who left or were thrown out or marginalized.
The PPP needs to reach out not reach in to expand its prospects otherwise it could see its support shrink further as Maxwell warned. The PPP should learn from the PNC that brought opponents together and sought reconciliation among former enemies causing the PNC to do quite well at the polls.

I read Maxwell's letter and I believe he is right on the money. In my humble opinion the whole lot of Presidential & Political Adviser in the Office of The President does not amount to a hand full of caca-belly. Clement Rohee, Robert Persaud, Kellawan Lall , Gail Texeira, Kwame Mckoy and some are all net liability and energy sapper of the Party Robert Persaud ran one of the most stupid campaign for which he should be sent on a five year pilgrimage to Monkey Mountain.

Why warn the PPP? Let them fall, the only problem is that should the APNU ascend to power, we will see decades of rigging and destruction. The AFC are a bunch of crook who looking to fill their pockets also. So there is really just a choice of the lesser evils. The PPP is arrogant, let natural selection take its toll.

THERE IS A CLEAR REASON THE PPP LOST THEIR MAJORITY.

Even though Guyana's economy was doing well, thousands of PPP supporters had grown disillusioned with the arrogance and complacency displayed by the party, and they were especially peeved by the larceny and thievery engaged in by the likes of PPP Ministers Irfaan Alli and Robert Persaud.

PROOF OF PPP THIEVERY AND CORRUPTION

* Check out the mansions at Pradoville2---Jagdeo, Robert Persaud, Irfaan Alli---who else ?

GOOD NEWS FOR THE PPP

In his very first month in office, President Ramotar instructed his Ministers that there must be no more SHOWBOATING---and he also warned against CORRUPTION.

While former President Jagdeo was an obnoxious, insecure egomaniac--Donald Ramotar is like a breath of fresh air---mature, professional, responsible--very Presidential---a solid leader!

As Guyanese get to know Donald Ramotar more, many who left the PPP will return to the party by the next election.

Remember folks, the PPP lost the majority by less than 5000 votes in the last election.

It was a blessing for the PPP to lose their majority---no more smugness and overconfidence by PPP officials.

Ramotar has already taken stock---the PPP is back on track.

Mara, I agree with the writer and with you. I have made this point here to their “dumb ass” supporters that people (Blacks Indians) are unhappy with the PPP performance in govt. People are openly critical of them and see them as a corrupt entity that does not have the interest of the average man in the street. I believe that had Nagamottoo announced his move to AFC earlier giving the AFC more lead time to campaign the PPP would have lost more votes. People want viable options to the PPP. If the AFC can demonstrate that they are the real deal we will see a change at the polls.

So far Ramotar has done nothing to indicate that he is different from his predecessor. It is the same cabinet and a continuation of the same policies without the “cuss down & buse out”.

FC Bhai:

One thing we know for a fact is the PNC is not a viable option to the PPP---after 28 years in office the PNC runied and bankrupted Guyana.

THE PNC WILL NEVER, EVER RULE GUYANA AGAIN.

RE: THE AFC

They falsely portrayed themselves as an independent party during the election campaign last year, but now the Guyanese people have seen the true colors of the AFC.

THE AFC HAS BECOME THE PNC SIDEKICK IN PARLIAMENT!

Guyanese now know that a vote for the AFC is a vote to weaken the PPP and bring the PNC back into power.

CONCLUSION:

With 99% certainty the Rev predicts that the PPP will regain their majority in the next election.

A little common sense and a little simple mathematics will tell you all you need to know about what the outcome of the next election in Guyana will be.

The Rev maintains, with 99% certainty, that the PPP will regain the majority in the next election.

Incumbents nearly always have an advantage over their challengers in elections, particularly when economic conditions are favorable.

Unlike the 2011 election, President Ramotar will be the incumbent in the next general election and if Guyana's economy continues to experience significant growth and development, the President will not only win re-election but will also win by a majority.

Of course, many of these losers here are hoping and wishing for the PNC to return to office--they want to see Guyana broke and bankrupt.

The current leadership of the PNC has done nothing in the last 25 years to even alleviate the Burnham Syndrome from the minds of Non-Afro Guyanese. On the contrary, they have re-inforced it with their "mo-fiah, slow-fiah" campaign which resulted in deaths of hundreds of innocent lives and destruction of millions in property.

Billy:

Good points above.

We all witnessed the rowdy behavior of PNC supporters after the November election---the PNC clearly lost---yet these miscreants took to the streets.

It is this bullying, antagonizing, intimidating, wrong and strong mentality of PNC supporters that will ensure that non afro Guyanese people will never ever support the PNC in significant numbers.

No problem. The PPP however has proven to non Indos how hostile it is to them and, with a declining Indo vote, seems destined to remain a minority govt.

That being the case, then why is he still being surrounded by the stinker lot at both Office Of The President and in the ministries. You will be surprise to hear what many long standing PPP supporters think of the likes of Robert Persaud, Irfan Ali, Gail Texeira, Clement Rohee. A friend of mine was tapped by Donald to head a New Ministry, but declined on good advise. I know Donald would love to clean house but found himself shackled and is afraid that he would be swept out with the pile of garbage since they were the very lot that paved his way to the Presidency.

Unfortunately wolves are still baying on the horizon and the tots in the AFC are still too immature to differentiate between lambs and wolves in sheep clothing. Wink

Mara:

Donald has been president for just under 3 months. He cannot rock the boat yet---the house cleaning has been delayed.

But dont forget---in his very first month---he made it pointedly clear to his Ministers--NO MORE SHOWBOATING! He also talked about CORRUPTION.

Unlike Jagdeo, who had quite a racket going---lots of payoffs and shadiness---Ramotar seems to be a man of impeccable character and integrity.

TIME WILL TELL!

I concur. Had he done so from the inception of the Ramjattan / Jagdeo imbroglio, where he found himself the lone voice of truth when others meekly kow-tow to the lies of Jagdeo, the political landscape could have been different and better today. Other progressive elements within both the PPP and the PNC would have been embolden to follow suite and stood heir grounds against creeping tyranny on all sides.

You are right. Time will tell. However let be hasten to add that Dodald Ramotar is an a unique position, so different from all his predecessor to put his stamp and prove his greatness or just be another partisan hack and failure.

Successful minority governments are those that are capable of setting aside partisan and petty politics, seek and find consensus based on fairness, justice , equity and at all time, solid principles on what is best for the nation. Stephen Harper emerged from a first term minority to a solid second term majority and created history by relegating the Liberal, Canada's political behemoth to third part status. Personally I would love to see Donald succeed, but for that to happen, it would take intestinal fortitude to dump the scums that he is surrounded with, and although the Donald has a lot of guts, it's not the type of tripe needed for the job.
