All the hand wringing and political bickering were just a front as Jenifer Green pays up after the threat of court action. Hopefully Glen Lall and Ram will follow suit and pay the piper.

The wife of Georgetown Mayor Hamilton Green, Jenifer Basdeo-Green has paid the full $10.2 million owed in rates and taxes for her Jelante Pharmacy on Mandela Avenue to the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC).

This is according to M&CC acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba. She said on Wednesday there was some misunderstanding regarding this issue, but she was happy that the payment was made in such a timely manner.

“I am happy to say that Mayor Hamilton Green whose wife was indebted to this council for $10.2 million and who has done all kinds of things in writing has paid in full,” Sooba stated. She said payment was made by way of a manager’s cheque and she personally thanked the mayor for allowing good sense to prevail in the matter.

“Mayor Green has set the pace and, therefore, Glenn Lall and Bhena Lall and Christopher Ram should either follow the example of Mayor Green’s wife who paid in full her rates and taxes or face the court of law,” Sooba declared. The acting town clerk stated that media reports that seem to suggest that the M&CC will no longer collect owed taxes from Christopher Ram and the Lalls, who are being sued for the outstanding amounts, are false.

She said there was no deal made to have their taxes reduced or omitted from the books. Sooba also asserted that the position of the public relations officer of the council, Royston King, is not necessarily the same as the council, as he is speaking for himself and not the council.

Several persons have been sued by the City Council for non-payment of rates and taxes. Rajpati Latchmansingh owes $9.2 million for his Lot 38 Cummings Street, Alberttown, Georgetown property. Garland Lodge owes $2.4 million for Lot 134 Fifth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown; and Charles James, $5.2 million for Lot 21 Werk-En-Rust, Georgetown.

Ram is indebted to the council for $11.3 million for properties on Waterloo Street, Georgetown, while Lall and his wife owe more than $5.6 million in taxes for a Lot 24 Saffon Street, Georgetown property. The cases were filed by Attorney Sandil Kissoon from the Kissoon and Kissoon Law Firm on behalf of the M&CC.
