Under siege in Washington, Trump reaps Saudi arms deal, stronger ties

RIYADH, (Reuters) – Under political fire at home, U.S. President Donald Trump sealed a $110 billion arms deal with Saudi Arabia on Saturday on his maiden foreign trip as he struggled to shift attention from the aftermath of his firing of the director of the FBI.

The arms deal, plus other investments that U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said could total up to $350 billion, was the central achievement of Trump’s first day in Riyadh, first stop on a nine-day journey through the Middle East and Europe.

Speaking to journalists after a ceremony to exchange agreements, Trump said it was a “tremendous day” and spoke of “hundreds of billions of dollars of investments into the United States and jobs, jobs, jobs. So I would like to thank all of the people of Saudi Arabia.”

King Salman gave Trump a remarkably warm greeting, meeting him at the steps of Air Force One on arrival, shaking the hand of Trump’s wife, Melania, riding with Trump in his limousine and spending most of the day with him.

the saudis always promise a lot and never deliver in retrospect.

At least, let's give them a change not to deliver on a promise!  I think Trump will want to see it, so they will comply!

Perhaps there is an indication that the Saudis are at the US beck and call; hence the will have to comply with Donald Trump.

They are knee-deep in shyte in Yemen and running out of options in OPEC, so they see who's boss! And Trump does not like deal breakers!

Does Trump have any investments in Saudi at the moment. Maybe sitting on the back burner is a massive golf course that he might plan to build or some other project. You never know with this sly President

After seeding a hateful ideology all over the globe they are now reaping the rewards of having their own devilish spawns coming back to eat their parents. They are a wart on the world's backsides...a truly abhorrent people. I imagine they need that much armaments to keep back the swarms of people coming after them.

It is a great shame the US is their only defender and we are the ones giving them the means to survive. Imagine if these people just donated a tenth of that sum to Jordan to build homes for its burden of 3 million refugees. Jordan is benefiting from the labor force but it suffers because It cannot provide them with basic amenities quickly and enough given the scale of their problem. Note the Saudis can get rid of its slave labor and absorb a significant portion of the refugees but it would not. That is trump brand of globalist being projected; militaristic, aggressive self interested and without compassion.

I doubt it.  Trump has several conflicting forces to balance out.  This is likely his carrot to the Saudis, but the stick will also come.

I agree with your views on the Wahabs and I am not too comfortable with all of Trump's overture, but I will watch.  This deal is basically signing a death warrant for 10s of thousands of Yemenis.  The Saudis are a dangerous snake and should not be trusted.

I would have preferred him make his first speech in Jordan!

I have not commented on Trump for a very long time since I am disappointed with his policies after becoming President.

We cannot discount the magnitude of this agreement and it's positive impact on Arms manufacturing industry in America which is a very huge industry.

He still has the monkey of impeachment on his back. Will he be able to push that monkey off ? I predict yes, he will.

This is no way an endorsement of Trump.

The Saudis are rich and arrogant and there is no stick to them until the oil economy dies and that is a long time from now. The press reported on a recent state visit of their king outside the country he had over 80 vehicles some 1000 in his entourage. They have long lost contact with compassion and reality. Trump has to be on the Asperger spectrum because he also seems not to grasp the magnitude of his office and diminishes it with his nonsense tweets, presumption that the press lies and ignores his personal flip flops. He fails to grasp America's value to the world and sees it only in terms of what the world can deliver to America's door. It is the kind of pseudo mercantilism/ suzerain/serf economic relations that died a century ago.

The Saudis are an abhorrent and evil civilization, that we agree.  Trump is trying something new.  I don't believe he has not noticed, with all great intentions, the  failure of Obama to nudge the Saudis down a more moderate path.  Trump is listening!

None of it really matters because Trump isn't going to be President for much longer.

Not long, just another seven or so years!

My guess is he is gone this year padnah. It wouldn't be long before he begin to wish he had remained a private citizen running his crookedness privately. So far all we know about the Trumps' private business is what Melania's bubby and puzzy look like. This Russian investigation and now a potential criminal one will force him to disclose everything he has tried so earnestly to keep private for about half a century.

I do not like this from the Post. This is taking advantage of a woman for her  past and making her the object of their contempt of this President. She probably had to take advantage of her only asset in a cruel world to survive. Today, she has been quite a reserved woman, shirking the lime light and probably not liking her position of prominence in the world. I think this is in poor taste.

I deleted the post. Thanks.

You have a lot of similarities with Trump, you listen for one!  You love pretty White women, for two!

Correction. I love all types of women. Ashamedly, I am more attracted to the beautiful ones. Secondly, I am not crooked like Trump. Lastly, I am not bullheaded and don't have any problems being corrected.

As noted from the article .....

Trump registered eight companies in Saudi Arabia during campaign: report

President-elect Donald Trump registered eight companies during his presidential campaign that appear to be tied to hotel interests in Saudi Arabia, according to a report in The Washington Post.

Trump registered the companies in August 2015, shortly after launching his presidential bid, according to The Post.

The companies were registered under names such as THC Jeddah Hotel and DT Jeddah Technical Services, according to financial disclosure filings.

The names of the companies registered appeared similar in pattern to how Trump named other companies connected to hotel deals registered in foreign cities, according to the Post. Trump names companies after cities in the state in which he is dealing with. Jiddah, also spelled Jeddah, is the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia, located on the Red Sea coast about 60 miles west of Mecca.

The Post reported that by the time of Trump's May financial filing, four of those companies in which Trump was the president or director were still active. Trump has in the past said he wants to protect the oil-rich Arab kingdom.

During a rally on August 21, the day Trump created four of those companies, he said he gets along well with Saudi Arabia.

"They buy apartments from me," Trump said during the Alabama rally. "They spend $40 million, $50 million. Am I supposed to dislike them? I like them very much.”

In January of this year, Trump said on Fox News he "would want to protect Saudi Arabia.

"I would want to protect Saudi Arabia," he said during the interview. "But Saudi Arabia is going to have to help us economically. They were making, before the oil went down ... they were making $1 billion a day.”

During his presidential campaign, the president-elect often called out his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, for accepting money from Saudi Arabia for the Clinton Foundation.
