Net Rockers held Amelia’s Ward Panthers to a 2-2 draw to send the Panthers packing and Botafago downed Hi Stars of West Watooka out of the championship, as they made their debut in this year’s 5th GT Beer year end Christmas football championship which is organized by the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) on Sunday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
Play will now resume on Friday with another double header in crucial matches featuring Kwakwani Strikers, who lost their opening game to Topp XX, facing the reigning champions Silver Shattas who won their first game against Topp XX and the other will see Botafago facing Eagles United who also won their abrupt encounter, which they were leading with less than five minutes to go 1-0, when officials were forced to call off the game.
Botafago first made their mark with a 4-1 crushing of Hi Stars as Jashawn Moore gave them an early lead in the 11th minute when he scored and teammate Jamal Haynes made it 2-0 as the first half concluded.
Two minutes after play resumed the Stars shone through a goal by Jason Monah making it a 2-1 lead for the Botafago side, but it soon was 3-1 when Haynes again netted in the 60th minute and the Amar Jones sealed the fate of Hi Stars when he scored in the 80th minute. The end result would be 4-1 for Botafago.
The second game was competitive and Denzil Pryce would give the Rockers a 1-0 lead only to have it level through Panthers’ Matthew Whyte in the 37th minute. And the scores were tied 1-1 at lemon time.
Clarence Huggins would give the lead back to Rockers in the 52nd minute for a 2-1 score and when it seemed they were looking like taking the game, the Ward would even things through Omalli Webb in the 80th minute. Fortunes favoured the Rockers side in the late stages of this game when an apparent ‘handled ball’ by their player in the box went unnoticed by the game officials and the match eventually ended 2-2, effectively knocking out the Ward side as the Rockers remain in contention for a place to the next round.
On Friday two more matches are planned with Kwakwani Strikers facing Silver Shattas in one game and the other brings together Botafago against Eagles United.
