The Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) under the new leadership of President Terrence Mitchell has set an ambitious nationwide football championship to mark their 2017 season opener involving the eight associations affiliated to the Guyana Football Federation to battle for a $2M first prize in a $6M championship package dubbed the GT Beer ‘Sunday Night Super Cup’ tournament, which is set to kick off at the Mackenzie Sports Club tomorrow night.
In the opening fixture of the two group competition tomorrow night Upper Demerara’s Linden side will face Essequibo/ Pomeroon in the second game at 21.00hrs, but this will be preceded by the first game of the tournament from 19.00hrs between East Bank and East Coast association sides.
A confident Mitchell, who was elected to serve a two year term in May after the association was wobbling with resignations, said, “This inter association championship will be unusually high. If you are in the Elite League, which is just those clubs playing in the League which the top clubs from each association participating, and one association has about five clubs, Linden has one the UDFA Top XX but those are clubs. In this scenario Linden has eight, nine as Top XX is in the elite League and the best players from nine clubs will form the Linden team. Right away you see the skill level is going up and every association will come with that skill level and as such I consider this tournament is where you will see real performance, real high level performance football.”
According to the UDFA boss, “Banks DIH’s GT Beer has officially branded Linden football again. This is what we managed to do this time around, not just brand the year end football. But they are branding the year over, and we are preparing as soon as this tournament is over in September 3, we go into our UDFA League which is a long playing of term football with over 50 playing days, where twenty five days of football will be played before the Christmas football is staged in December and the League will restart in February next year meaning a lot of football through to April next year.”
Looking ahead in terms of what this championship offers, Mitchell opined: “The potential of this tournament could be bigger than the Elite League National Club championship,” and for this he felt the support should be great as the best players will be playing throughout the tournament.
The UDFA, according to Mitchell, has already been given the green-light by the governing Guyana Football Federation (GFF) where the eight teams representing the Upper Demerara, Georgetown, Bartica, East Bank Demerara, West Demerara, Essequibo, East Coast Demerara and Berbice associations are allowed to play.
