West Demerara’s David Blake threaded in the lone goal of the game as pre-tournament favourites Georgetown suffered a 1-0 loss to the West side and placed themselves in a strong position to advance to the semi-finals as the top qualifier from Group B, while Berbice and Bartica failed to earn their first win as they ended that encounter 2-2 when the inaugural GT Beer Super, Sunday Night Cup, football championship continued at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground last Sunday. As early as the 3rd minute Georgetown found themselves on the back foot with Blake netting what would eventually be the lone goal of the encounter, and come away with a win which placed them on six points from two wins in Group B and join hosts Upper Demerara who also have won twice to be on six points and lead Group A with one more game to play for each of the eight association teams involved in this championship, which has $2M as the first prize. In the first game of the night it was Berbice who began the scoring after Graham Thomas scored in the 6th minute but Bartica were able to level things through Shaquille Hopkinson in the 20th minute. Then Berbice regained the lead when Stephon Boucher slotted home a 28th minute strike for a 2-1 lead which they enjoyed when the half time whistle came. Berbice would continue to hold the edge and while both sides battled it out in the final period it would be Bartica who would get the equalizer just one minute from the end of regulation play as Aloysious Edwards scored in the 89th minute as the game eventually ended 2-2 and both teams gained their first point of the championship after one loss and one draw.
