UK calls on Ramotar to reconvene Parliament as soon as possible

Posted By Stabroek editor On November 17, 2014 @ 10:31 am In Local News | No Comments

UK High Commissioner to Guyana, Andrew Ayre has called for President Donald Ramotar to reconvene the National Assembly as soon as possible stating that Parliament is the “central pillar of democracy.”

Ayre said “the UK calls on the Government of Guyana, or the President more precisely of Guyana to reconvene Parliament at the earliest possible opportunity”.

“Article 50 (of the Guyana Constitution), it clearly refers to democracy in Guyana being made up of the President, the Cabinet and parliament so it it’s important that we stay within the Constitution of Guyana going forward”, the UK High Commissioner stated.

Ramotar’s prorogation of Parliament last Monday has triggered torrents of criticism from the opposition and civil society bodies.

Ayre was speaking today at an event at the Bank of Guyana where the British High Commission in collaboration with the Government of Guyana is hosting an Anti-Money Laundering Training programme.

England is we motherland

England was Guyana's slave master. They plundered and corrupted the people before they left. Everywhere the British ruled and left, they left a time bomb.

Isn't that what the UK government is calling for now? democracy and respecting democratic norms vs suspending parliament and denying the people the right to choose their government?

What is the difference?

Haas man, why did not UK call on Canada when Brian Harper did this? Double standard?

In the specific situation, an international group, headed by former Jimmy Carter, was in Guyana to ensure that elections were free and fair -- unlike those conducted by the PNC government from the mid-1960 to 1992.

Good question!

The UK government is doing the same thing they want democracy restored to GY and the international community is well within their right to make those calls.

Jagan was an advocate of getting the international community to end one dictatorship. Now it is appropriate to get them involved again to end the 2nd dictatorship.

Canada vs Guyana...leemmee thinkkkk

FM

It is folly to think the UK did not ask Harper to call elections which he did 4 weeks later.

Do not forget the UK's representative in Canada is the Governor General and she stated clearly that Harper should call elections not prorogue parliament.

Canada is a vibrant democracy that is why Harper had to haul e old clath and call elections 4 weeks after. You dunces cannot comprehend that.

We yearn for democracy not no dictatorship by that lard.

If the UK was praising Ramotar for his actions you would be citing this as evidence of how justified he was to take that act.

Guyana was independent on the 70s and 80s when the PPP appealed to them, Canada and the USA to deal with the Burnham dictatorship.  So if it was good then why not now that the PPP is as intent in stifling democracy as Burnham was.
