UNICEF presents bus to NOC

In recognition of the transportation needs of the students of the New Opportunity Corps (NOC) in Essequibo, Region Two the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) presented the institution with a new 15- seater bus.

The vehicle was presented to the NOC students today at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport by UNICEF’s Representative to Guyana and Suriname, Dr. Suleiman Braimoh.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony in his brief remarks expressed appreciation to UNICEF for its support to the institution by providing much needed equipment and support to the re-integration programme.

Minister Anthony indicated that the donation of the bus is timely, particularly since the previous one had served the Ministry for 20 years before it was sent to the NOC. Further, the Minister assured that the vehicle will be used for its intended purpose. Recently, the USAID also presented a bus to the NOC.

Dr. Braimoh emphasised that the presentation of the bus is premised on the fact that the children need sufficient means of transportation to enable them to access education and health care.

He recognised that while the students are in the institution, the responsibility still exists for transportation to be provided for them just as parents would in the family setting.

The NOC has been in existence for 134 years and during that time it has produced students who have achieved up to eight subjects at the CXC, evidence that the programmes developed for the students are working.
