By Jonathan Fowler of Yahoo News service - September 4, 2014 - has reported "One person commits suicide every 40 seconds -- more than all the yearly victims of wars and natural disaster -- with the highest toll among the elderly, the United Nations said Thursday."
It continues...."The most suicide-prone countries were Guyana (44.2 per 100,000), followed by North and South Korea (38.5 and 28.9 respectively).
Next came Sri Lanka (28.8), Lithuania (28.2), Suriname (27.8), Mozambique (27.4), Nepal and Tanzania (24.9 each), Burundi (23.1), India (21.1), and South Sudan (19.8).
Next were Russia and Uganda (both with 19.5), Hungary (19.1), Japan (18.5), and Belarus (18.3).
The UN agency said its goal is to cut national suicide rates by 10 percent by 2020.
A major challenge, it said, is that suicide victims are often from marginalised groups of the population, many of them poor and vulnerable."
An editorial in the IndoCaribbeanWorld.com web site is alarmed about the disproportionate number of Indians in this high rate of suicide in Guyana.
That web site states "The evidence is there in the statistics, and the Guyana government has not missed the dire warnings, such as in the study by Dr Frank Beckles, βThe Shadow of Death: A Recent Study of Suicides in Guyana, Incidence, Causes and Solutionsβ.
In this study, it was reported that the majority of persons committing suicide were young males below the age of 35 years. They were likely to be poorly-educated, employed in low-income occupations, residing in the same community all their lives and to be less likely to have children. A βsuicide clusterβ was identified in Black Bush Polder, in the East Berbice-Corentyne Region. The evidence is tragic as it is disheartening, showing that 52 percent of all Guyanese suicides taking place here."
It continues - "In the bigger, national picture, the figures are disconcerting, showing that annual suicide rates have been consistently highest in the East Berbice-Corentyne Region, with 50 suicide deaths per 100,000 persons. This was followed by the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region with 36 deaths, the Essequibo Islands-West-Demerara Region at 24 deaths, the Mahaica-Berbice Region with 22 deaths, and the Demerara-Mahaica Region showing 20 persons killing themselves.
Today, suicide is a serious public health issue back home, and is ranked seventh of the ten major causes of death in Guyana. For years now the overall suicide rate is approximately 20-25 per 100,000 population. Further study of the data reveals it is the leading cause of death among young people age 15-24, and the third leading cause of death among persons age 25-44.
Available statistics show more than over 5,000 persons have committed suicide in the last 25 years, with 946 reported deaths between the years 2003-2007. There were 201 suicides in 2003; 186 in 2004; 171 in 2005; 202 in 2006; and 186 in 2007."
