Meanwhile, the Ministry of the Presidency in a press release issued this afternoon, stated that President David Granger will tomorrow name the members of the panel to investigate the unrest.

As I said before, they (the PNC) will make this whole thing a mockery if they do not name an impartial committee to investigate.

What are you trying to say? That Guyanese cannot be impartial? Have you got such a low opinion of the capabilities of Guyana? You are making political capital out of this incident, without any reason to. Because thieves and murderers were accustomed to be let loose or not caught by the PPP, these criminals  have been able to freely carry out their crimes for 23 years. So now that they are getting caught and locked up, they are vex that law and order is now being restored. You seem more concerned about the criminals than the victims of them. I am sure that the victims and their family would be more than happy with the death of those lot.

Mr.T

It is a well known strategy to sweep matters under the rug, govt normally assign a committee, in Granger's case COI. This is the govt Guyana deserves, a do nothing incompetent bunch of leeches on the tax payers.

“Bring the Minister” – Rioting Prisoners want Ramjattan

Prisons currently engaged in a prison riot that has seen the death of some 17 other prisoners are requesting the presence of National Security Minister and Vice President Khemraj Ramjattan.

Prisoners during a brief exchange with Police Commander Clifton Hicken made the request for Ramjattan to show himself.

Prisoners are alleging that prison officials left their brethren to die in the fire.

One of the prisoners shouted from a cell thay had its's walls kicked out that "nobody ain't want escape… People wan go out the right way…them choose to muredee them in there.

The prisoners are alleging that joint services ranks  "throw tear gas in the fire" on Thursday.

This, the prisoners contend would have led to the death of the seven prisoners since ranks also allegedly turned off the water to the block.

"I rather carry this building with me…The whole f**k**g jail gotta break up," shouted Gray Boy accused of the murder of Courtney Crum-Ewing.

The prisoners also lounged a missile in the form of a bottle of soap liquid at Commander Hicken who managed to dodge the missile.

Presently prisoners have made their way to the  compound of the facility and are lounging missiles outside.

It also appears as though the man have furnished themselves with a hacksaw and are sawing their way through the facility.

Demerara Waves also understand that Tactical Service Unit (TSU) ranks have already been dispatched to the prison.

BREAKING: Prisoners threaten to ignite gas cylinder, gasoline in standoff with security forces

The situation at the Georgetown Prison deteriorated Friday morning, with inmates threatening to light a cooking gas cylinder and a tank containing gasoline.

Fire was set to another section, causing fire fighters to go into action even as efforts were being made to get the inmates back in their cells.

The prisoners not only stoned prison wardens and police but also hurled back tear gas canisters at police who are trying desperately to bring the situation under control.

A Demerara Waves Online News reporter heard six gunshots fired inside the prison.

The prisoners earlier Friday morning used large pieces of wood described as “two by four” to break other sections of the prison.

A southern wall was also kicked open in what is widely regarded as the worst prison riot in Guyana’s history.

Fire fighters, soldiers and riot squad police have been deployed in and around the prison.

Sixteen prisoners were killed and five others injured when inmates set fire to a section of the Georgetown Prison.

Fresh unrest at Georgetown Prison

In the wake of the fiery death of 16  inmates of the Georgetown Prison,  prisoners there Friday morning  began fresh unrest.

Police were summoned to the maximum security prison to respond to the inmates making loud noises in one of the corridors, a top police officer told Demerara Waves Online News.

The police officer said the prisoners were also pelting bricks at prison wardens.  No fires have been lit but several of them have escaped through a hole in the wall of Section C.

Several other inmates are still hospitalized following the worst prison riot in Guyana’s history.

The inmates had originally become angered after security forces search the jail and found a quantity of narcotics, cellular phones and other prohibited items.

17 dead, several injured in fiery prison riot

Several hours of unrest within the Georgetown Prison on Camp Street have left 17 inmates dead and five others injured following a fire on Thursday in a section of the facility.

According to reports, the bodies of 16 prisoners were found in the ‘Capital A’ section of the Prison Thursday morning. This section, located on the eastern side of the compound on John Street, holds prisoners on remand for or convicted of serious crimes.

The other dead prisoner has been identified as Rayon Paddy, who was charged for killing Sterling Products Limited security guard Wilbert Stewart and Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) Engineer Trevor Abrams last year. He was among six prisoners rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital on Thursday. Paddy was reportedly pronounced dead on arrival.
The other five prisoners were admitted to the medical facility and were being treated for serious burns about their bodies.
This newspaper was told that some of the prisoners died from smoke inhalation since they pulled shut the grill door to a section of the jail in resisting prison officers, who were trying to transport them to a safer location within the compound. The officers consequently could not get to them.
As the news started to spread, family members of prisoners rushed to the Prison to enquire whether their imprisoned loved ones were burnt as well. In some cases, they were told that their relatives were injured in the fire and rushed to the Hospital.
Chaos subsequently erupted at the medical facility as family members were desperate for information, but none was forthcoming from the officials there. This resulted in the police security calling for back-up from the Police Force as well as prison officers. Just over a dozen additional officers were deployed to the medical facility, and they cordoned off the entrance to the Emergency Room.
All of the patients and persons, who were in the ER waiting room, were ushered out of the building and asked to wait at the seating area outside as most, if not all, of the ER staffers were preoccupied with the injured prisoners.
Guyana Times was told that instructions had come from the head offices (of the Prison Service and Police Force) not to disclose any information. This angered those gathering, with some of them venting their frustrations.
One woman said, “We are asking them questions and they ain’t saying nothing, at least if this is going on, come out and tell us… people need to know what’s going on, we need information… they lock us out at Camp Street when we try to get information and tell us to come here (the Hospital) but when we come here, is the same thing happening.”
She was there looking for information on her relative Samuel Bacchus, who was charged back in 2013 for conspiracy in relation to the robbery/murder of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara businessman Zulfikar Namdar.
“Nobody ain’t come to fight or anything; we just concerned. We got loved ones in there – we heard he is in there, people see when they bring him and they ain’t giving no sort of information,” another woman, whose brother, Collis Collison, was also injured, vented. Collison was on remand for discharging rounds at the Police. He was also freed from the High Court on a murder charge back in 2014.
The relatives of 28-year-old Jermaine Otto, who is on remand for the murder of businessman Ashok Raghu outside the Botanical Gardens, Vlissengen Road, Georgetown, in 2014, and 22-year-old Oswald Yaw, who is on remand for collecting $1.7 million to kill Herstelling, East Bank Demerara joiner Nathan Persaud last year, were also there.
However, up to press time, this newspaper could not have confirmed whether any of these persons were killed as a result of the unrest. The names of the 15 inmates who died at the Prison have not been released. Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan, during a press conference on Thursday, disclosed that the families of the dead prisoners would be informed before the names were released to the public.
Guyana Times understands that prison officials, acting on reports, had carried out a check on Wednesday within the ‘Capital A’ building during which several contraband items were seized. These included 19 cellular phones and a quantity of narcotics.
It was in retaliation for this that the prisoners set a series of fires later that night. The prisoners reportedly removed the mattresses and put them in front of the grille of their cells before setting them afire.
Firefighters spent hours there, putting out at least three separate blazes at the Camp Street Prison on Wednesday evening. After they managed to put out the first fire, the angry inmates started another blaze at the same spot. This fire too was successfully doused after about 15 minutes, much to the dissatisfaction of the prisoners, who again started another fire. The last inferno took fire tenders approximately half an hour to contain close to midnight.
No one was injured during Wednesday night’s incident, but Thursday morning, the inmates continued the unrest within the confines of the penitentiary and some were injured.
During the second bout of ‘lash out’, the prisoners started another fire around 11:15h. Persons in the area related that there was a loud explosion in the penitentiary before smoke was seen coming from the same building that was on fire the night before.
While firefighters were able to put out the flames, several inmates died and others were badly injured and rushed to the Hospital.
As the crowd began to grow in the vicinity of the Georgetown Prison, heavily armed Police Officers were deployed as added security. While some persons went to the hospital after hearing inmates were transferred there, dozens stuck around for at least three to four hours, waiting for any information about their imprisoned relatives. Others were just lingering in hopes of getting a glimpse of the dead prisoners.

Govt must take responsibility for deadly prison riots – PPP

The parliamentary Opposition, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) wasted no time in criticising the current Government for the disaster that rocked the Camp Street Prison, leaving more than a dozen prisoners dead.
In a press statement issued shortly after the tragedy, the Party expressed “utter shock and horror” over what occurred at the penitentiary.

PPPC MP Clement Rohee

PPPC MP Clement Rohee

“This virtual rebellion within the prison walls is the worst of its kind in recent history,” the Party stated.
Further, the PPP insisted that the “Granger-led Administration” must take full responsibility for the deadly prison protests.
The Party also called for a Board of Inquiry to be established to investigate the circumstances that led to this “sorry state of affairs”.
Notably, several unrests and killings occurred in the same overcrowded jailhouse while the PPP/Civic was in Government.
Nonetheless, the PPP assured that it has more to say about this development.

How quickly people change!  You had a lot of excuses for the roaming Buxton/Agricola terrorists, now you saying kill those serving time for their deeds.

I'm sure some of the dead were former PNC operatives with incriminating information on roaming "free radicals"!!

Note this is police...the law and not a drug kingpin as the law, that is facing down people intent on killing themselves.

This news has made it into the International Community, was on BBC.

This is real barbaric treatment and violation of the human rights of these prisoners by denying them meals.  They have been sitting in prison for ages awaiting trials.  A real breakdown in the criminal justice system in Guyana.

I did not hear any news of 'escapees', that should also be a major concern here.

8 prison officers rushed to hospital – as deadly riot continues

March 4, 2016 10:42 am Category: Crime, latest news A+ /A-

At least eight prison officers have been rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) along with a number of inmates since rioting actions began early this morning at the Camp Street Prison.

One of the injured prison officer at the GPHC

One of the injured prisoner at the GPHC

A source at the GPHC moments ago told INews that there is ‘chaos and confusion’ at the hospital presently as many more officers and prisoners continue to be brought in for emergency medical treatment.

“I ain’t able with this, if people can see what is going on here and people are already panicking wondering what really is happening. Prison officers keep coming in one after the other for treatment. Then you see them escorting prisoners in bunches and all of them need fast medical attention,” the woman said.

Sources has earlier this morning indicate that one prison officer had died. However, INews was reliably informed that no one died during this morning’s riot.

Calm restored at Georgetown Prison; negotiated settlement reached between govt, prisoners

prison_negotiationsCalm was restored at the Georgetown Prison late Friday morning as a delegation of prisoners met with two top government ministers and reached a negotiated settlement that sparked three days of unrest that left 17 inmates dead and nine others injured.

“I would believe so, I would think so. I think it was an important step… We believe that this was a very useful engagement and I think it will enure to the benefit of the whole security situation not only here in the prison but  in the country because people have families and their families are concerned about what is happening here and so we believe that was happened here this morning will ease the situation a bit,” Minister of State Joseph Harmon told reporters.

More than 12 prisoners met with the Public Security Minister, Khemraj Ramjattan and the Minister of State , telling them about the poor conditions in the Camp Street jail, limited telephone communication with families, poor quality food and inhumane conditions being meted out to them by members of the Guyana Prison Service.

They claimed that several of the prisoners were left to burn to death.

Ramjattan said the prisoners promised to stop the unrest that began Thursday night. “They have promised that they are going to calm down now that they have seen two senior members of government,” he said. The Public Security Minister rejected suggestions that government might appear weak by meeting the prisoners and giving into their demands. “Absolutely not, it is meeting them to meet their demands and I feel it is a useful thing talking to them and hearing their versions too because indeed they could be speaking to the prison authorities and the prison authorities listening to them and not acting,” he said.

Ramjattan said some of the concerns are “very credible” but it was too early to say whether any prison officers currently stationed at the Georgetown Prison would be re-deployed.

Harmon echoed Ramjattan’s report on the talks that the prisoners have assured that they would make every effort to convince other inmates to ease the unrest. “The important thing is that they have given us a commitment that when they get back into the prisoners that they will speak with the other prisoners to ensure that there is no further escalation in what is taking place this morning so I think we have a sort of a gentleman’s agreement on both sides. We are going to try to keep our end of the bargain and they are going to keep theirs,” said Harmon, a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

After the more than one hour of talks, Ramjattan said some of the issues such as the quality of food and telephone communication would be addressed immediately and that steps would be taken to address the others by the Board of Inquiry. “That Board of Inquiry will start as soon as possible to hear the complaints of the prisoners and I want as many prisoners to give the evidence of what is happening and the systems in place and all of that for purposes of remedying that which they are complaining about,” he said.

He hoped that prisoners would take the opportunity of testifying before the three-member Board, which could be named Thursday.

One should not make political comments about murderers awaiting trial. But if you do wish to involve the PPP: they had 23 years to improve the prisons, and to bar prisoners from having phones and drugs on them in prison. Instead, the PPP encouraged it. But now that the new government has started to come down hard on these things the prisoners want to complain. They got what they deserved. One should not feel sorry for them in any shape or form.

Mr.T

If there is one lesson to be learnt from these murders is that it is ok for a Black govt to kill prisoners. No riot from the Black population as their Black govt is in power. Maybe it was the right choice after all for Granger to win elections as he can kill with immunity from Black rage.  Black on Black crime pays.

What utter nonsense.  The poor food quality is not "coming down hard", it plain inhumane.  The food and general condition likely deteriorated fairly recently, causing the rebellion.  These people did not wait years to complain about food and lack of communication with relatives.  This is more recent!  They retaliated because they noticed it, they knew something had gone awry recently!!

I don't care what they did, I have no sympathy for them being in prison, that is besides the point.  However, as long as they are wards of the state, then they deserve some basic civil/human rights, and food is the most basic!!  That is the state's obligation!!

I believe the PNC sees the gravy going scarce with all the waste and fat salaries the gorging on, so they looking for places to cut back and why not the prisoners, they have no "complain" rights!  Who would listen to prisoners complaining about food?  No one cares, so they decided to take matters into their own hands!!

Now the PNC/AFC want to portray themselves as "heroes".  Hey, as usual, you started the fire, don't claim hero status for putting it out and cleaning up the mess!!
