Team Evolution’s Paul De Nobrega was golden in his performance on Sunday last on the Essequibo Coast where he pedaled to victory in the senior category of the Urban Benjamin Memorial Cycle Gold Race and in the process won one ounce of gold as his prize. The 75-mile contest saw the riders pedaling off at Charity rode all the way to Supenaam before returning to the starting line for the finish of what was a grueling battle. In the end, De Nobrega, representing the organising club, Evolution, completed the distance in Two Hours 55 minutes 52 Seconds (2:55.52) beating into second place Geron Williams who was followed by Christopher Griffith, Romello Crawford, Alanzo Ambrose and Jamal John, respectively. Trojan Cycle Club’s Curtis Dey collected the biggest prize any junior has ever won to date in Guyana for winning the junior category, half ounce of gold ($114,000); the event being sponsored by the Benjamin Family. Christopher Cornelius had to settle for the second place behind Dey with Briton John coming in third. Also enjoying a lucrative day was the veteran’s Under-45 winner who also enjoyed half ounce of gold as his prize. Taking that accolade and prize was another Team Evolution rider, Stephen Fernandes who beat off the challenge of Lear Nunes and Steve Ramsuchit. Emerging as the top Over-45 competitor was Andrew Spencer ahead of Amrit Sankar and Oliver Young. Meanwhile, there was a novice race which only attracted riders from the Essequibo for five-miles. Rockwell Smith took the top honours from Marlon Stoby.
