The United States (US) will Tuesday afternoon deliver 28 Guyanese deportees- the single largest number in years- to the land of their birth aboard a charter flight, Police Commissioner Seelall confirmed.

“It might be the biggest  from the US in the last many years,” he said, adding that he could not recall any being sent from as far back as 2008.

Other usually reliable sources said the MD-80 aircraft is expected to touch down at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) shortly after 2 PM with the convicts.

The Police Commissioner said the deportees could be monitored in accordance with the Prevention of Crimes Act if assessments suggest that any of them should be put under surveillance. “If in the assessment of the Crime Chief they need to be monitored then we will apply for monitoring. Outside of that, it’s just intelligence,” he said.

Persaud said that the batch of deportees include those who would have committed serious offenses as well as immigration violations.

Guyana and several other Caribbean countries have been begging the US to assist with the comfortable resettlement of deportees because many of them do not have any ties to their countries of birth.

People get deported for all sorts of reason. Many innocent children too.

I know law abiding people who overstay their time, pay taxes, contribute to the economy, and are sent back at the whims and fancies of the INS.

Yeah. And they leave the Latinos who committed identity theft. You and I would be prosecuted for this; yet they are forgiven.

What a shame. It should have been 28 scholars going back to serve their country rather than 28 deportees. How many of the 28 deportees can redeem themselves and play a positive role in society?

Are you high or just schupid?

One cannot be "law abiding" and also overstay their time while also paying taxes on jobs they held illegally. The INS does not have a "whims and fancies policy." Also, there is no such thing as "innocent children." These children belong where their parents belong.

If you come here and overstay, you are breaking the damn law and you should be deported by the INS. It's just that simple. Tourist visas is for tourism.

We just can't pick and choose which laws are important and which we can break with impugnity. Particularly something as basic as the borders. The primary job of the national government is security. Immigration control can't be any more fundamental to that.

Deportees arrive from US, escorted to police headquarters under tight security

Guyanese deportees arrive at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and escorted to a Guyana Police Force bus that transported them to the Guyana Police Force's headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department, Eve Leary.

Under tight security, at least 28 Guyanese d‎eportees were Tuesday afternoon escorted to police headquarters shortly after coming off a US government chartered flight.

The MD-82 jet touched down at the Cheddi Jagan Internationa Airport at exactly 2:39 PM, as a small number of relatives and friends mingled in the viewing gallery.

Prior to being granted permission to leave the plane, an inventory of their carry-on luggage--- mostly white bags--- was taken in the presence of Guyanese police and US embassy officials.

The deportees then boarded a 30-seater bus owned by the Guyana Police Force. A group of heavily ar‎med police from the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) accompanied the bus as sirens blared throughout the journey to the city. As the bus left the airport, a number of the deportees waived at their relatives who were in the parking lot.

Police Commissioner Seelall Persaud has told Caribbean News Desk that this batch is believed to be the single largest ever in more than six years.

Persaud has said that a number of the deportees could be monitored based on assessments that are to be conducted by the Criminal Investigations Department.

The Prevention of Crimes Act legally permits the police to monitor persons including deportees.
