U.S. pondering whether to charge Alberta politician with soliciting prostitutes
By The Canadian Press,
EDMONTON - A U.S. prosecutor says a decision should be made by the end of the week on whether to formally charge an Alberta politician arrested in a prostitution sting.
Mike Allen, member of the legislature for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo, was arrested Monday night by police in St. Paul, Minn., where he was attending a conference.
He was released the next morning and flew back to Edmonton.
St. Paul attorney Sara Grewing says her office is reviewing Allen's file for a possible gross misdemeanour charge of solicitation of prostitution.
She says a conviction typically carries a 90-day jail term and a $1,000 fine, but a first offender could get a much lighter sentence.
Allen, who is 51, has resigned from Alberta's governing Progressive Conservative caucus and apologized for what he calls an embarrassing moment and lapse of judgment.
