Dharun Ravi, a former Rutgers University student accused of spying on and intimidating his gay roommate, was found guilty Friday on charges of invasion of privacy, but jurors found him not guilty on several charges of bias intimidation.

His roommate, Tyler Clementi, an 18-year-old freshman, killed himself in September 2010 by jumping off the George Washington Bridge, which spans the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey, after learning that Ravi had secretly spied on his sexual encounter with another man.

The most serious charges in the case centered on whether Ravi's actions had constituted bias intimidation, meaning that he was motivated to inspire fear in Clementi because of his sexual orientation.

He was a typical Indian, who believes at every step he is outsmarting locals, while doing despicable things and getting away with everything. It is not the type of guy who feels remorse. When committing his crimes he thought he was doing the right thing,  giving a gay guy a lesson.

Deporting him to India is the worse part of his punishment. For sure life in an American jail is better than in a slum no matter how much money you may have. He can still show off in India that he spent prison time America.

Jury Finds Spying in Rutgers Dorm Was a Hate Crime

Matt Rainey for The New York Times
Published: March 16, 2012

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — A former Rutgers University student was convicted on Friday on all 15 charges he had faced for using a webcam to spy on his roommate having sex with another man, a verdict poised to broaden the definition of hate crimes in an era when laws have not kept up with evolving technology.

Mr. Ravi, 20, wearing a dark suit over his slight frame, sat expressionless as the jury forewoman read the verdict on the first count, of invasion of privacy. But he seemed surprised when she pronounced him guilty on the next charge, of bias intimidation. His eyes popped and he quickly turned his head from the jury. As he left the courtroom in a swarm of television cameras, his mother clutching his arm, he looked straight ahead and said nothing.

The jury also found him guilty of lying to investigators, trying
to influence a witness and tampering with evidence after he tried to cover up Twitter and text messages inviting others to join in the viewing . . .
