Attorney-at-Law, Vic Puran is the new prosecutor in the treason case against Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Major Bruce Munroe, his wife and a former Reserve Officer, Leonard Wharton.
He replaces the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack who has been appearing for the State since the commencement of the Preliminary Inquiry began.
“The DPP is busy and I was retained by the State. I would work for anyone that I’m being retained by” Puran, however, told reporters.
He is also a prosecutor for the Customs Anti Narcotics (CANU).
The long-serving criminal lawyer made his first appearance on Tuesday in the treason case against Munroe, his wife Carol Ann and Wharton before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Puran called on GDF Colonel Sydney James to identify voices on audio recordings being played in court. An amendment to the law now makes recordings admissible as evidence. James will continue testifying on January 26 at the Georgetown Magistrates' Court.
Lieutenant Quincy Critchlow had previously identified voices on the recordings.
The trio is accused of According to the charge leveled against the trio, between December 1, 2009 and December 16, 2010, at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, they intended to level war within Guyana to force the President out of his office, in order to compel the Government of Guyana to change its measures. The three were arrested on December 27, 2010.
Treason is punishable only by death by hanging.
Government has already rubbished calls by political parties and political and trade union activists for the charges to be dropped and the accused set free.
