Alim Shah Stores dropped from uniform voucher programme

June 13, 2016 3:11 am Category: Local News A+ / A-

…“victimisation” by Govt for Guyana Times column, claims Ryhaan Shah

The management of Alim Shah Stores on Regent Street and in Corentyne, notes that their stores have been dropped from Government’s School Uniform Voucher programme for the first time since the programme began under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government.

From the list issued by the Education Ministry in its full page advertisement it appears that Alim Shah is the only business that has been singled out for omission this year. The management feels that this is a direct result of Alim Shah’s daughter, Ryhaan Shah, a columnist of Guyana Times, being critical of the David Granger Administration.

According to Ryhaan Shah, “as an Indian rights activist” she was also very critical of the PPP/C Government but her father’s business was never singled out for victimisation under that government. She feels Guyana is moving once again into dangerous territory where “criticism of the Government is being stifled and any critics will be aware that they will pay a heavy price.”

Since the Alim Shah stores provide competitively priced school uniforms, the management feels that while government’s decision to drop the stores might affect business, the shops will continue to do back-to-school business. “It will also affect the local manufacturers who employ people to sew the uniforms for us, but we’ll all manage,” Alim Shah said.

Alim Shah has been in business since 1947 and noted that the business survived the worst of the Burnham era: “Being dropped is a setback but we’ll continue to do business. Our good prices and product will continue to attract customers. I’m very disappointed with the Granger Government’s decision but I’ve lived through it all and this will not break us.”

Ryhaan Shah says she is very troubled that government has taken this decision to “victimise her father and her father’s business. He’s 90 years old and has never hurt anyone. This is plain cowardice. Why not come after me?” she said.

Not sure what she means by "victimization". Is she also being threatened by the government or simply locked out of an economic deal??

Alim Shah was one of the nicest persons I came across. He gave me a brand new copy of the Holy Qur'an for free. To make my wedding suit in 1985, I bought the fabric from his store. I hope it was an oversight by the government to omit his business as a supplier of school uniforms. If not, the government needs to come straight and explain its reasoning.

The Guyana Times once again exposed for crappy reporting.

Ministry condemns Guyana Times’ article on Alim Shah

The Ministry of Education has noted with deep concern the article in the Guyana Times Newspaper (2016-06-15) under the caption ‘Education Minister to investigate Alim Shah’s claims’, noting that the article contains mischievous insinuations regarding the Uniform Voucher Programme.

A statement from the ministry noted that it publicly advertised for ‘Expressions of Interest’ to participate in the Uniform Voucher programme in 2016 and that the business under the name Alim Shah never indicated any interest in participating in the programme hence their name would not have been on the published 2016 list.

“They subsequently communicated with the Ministry indicating that they erroneously assumed that since they were on the list in previous years they would have automatically been included,” the statement noted.

According to the ministry, this matter has since been resolved with the entity and as such the ministry can only assume that the article is a mischievous attempt to imply political victimization which it highly resents and condemns.

When Guyana Times print wan story, you does have to wait a couple of days to verify if it's true, they always don't get it right the other one is the internet news from F.H.

Any way it's good this matter was resolved.

If you believe this was a mistake then I have a bridge to sell you. Were it not for the article in Guyana Times, Roop would not have put Alim on the list. He wants us to believe that every business re registered while Alim was the only one who didn't?  Thank god for the freedom of press that was reinstated by the PPP.

Why didn't Rhyaan Shah not have a discussion with the Ministry of Education regarding not being awarded a uniform contract before speaking to Guyana Times? Or did she to no avail? Clearly Guyana Times did not make up her charges.
