Wakenaam senior team fast bowling all-rounder Olwin Paton has passed away after he was hospitalised for a few days.
Paton, who also played for the Sans Souci Jaguars SC in Wakenaam and represented Essequibo at the U-17 and U-19 level, was rushed to the Suddie Hospital on Friday after he took ill while working in the interior.
Patonβs wife Andrea Williams told Kaieteur Sport that she was informed that he (Paton) was stung on one of his feet by a Scorpion, but no transportation was available at the time to take him to a hospital. She said that his co-workers finally got a car a few hours later to take him out, but the vehicle encountered problems on its way and they had to push it some distance which resulted in him reaching Suddie hospital at around 21:00hrs. She informed that when she visited him at the hospital there he couldnβt talk and wasnβt responding to treatment. Williams informed that they then took him to the West Demerara regional hospital on Saturday but there was no sign of improvement. She said he was taken to the Georgetown hospital on Sunday, but died upon arrival at the institution.
Williams indicated that she was informed that there was no sign on his foot to indicate that he was stung by the Scorpion and that he was not vomiting. She said that she saw tears streaming from his eyes prior to his demise.
Meanwhile, Captain of the Sans Souci Jaguars SC, Siddiq Mohamed said Paton was a vital member of his team. βHe was a hard working cricketer and his services will surely be missed. Olwin has always led the team in prayer prior to the game and was always willing to help the youths on and off the field. He was one of the players you can call upon when the team was in trouble and most times he will deliver,β Mohamed stated.
He said that members of the club are saddened at his passing and have extended condolences to his family. The Wakenaam Cricket Committee has also extended condolences to his family and friends.
Chief Executive Officer of V Net Communications Safraz Sheriffudeen, who is one of the main sponsors of cricket in Wakenaam, said he was shocked at the news and has sympathised with his family members.
A post mortem examination is expected to be performed on his body. Paton, who also captained the Essequibo Islands Secondary School, will be laid to rest tomorrow in Wakenaam. He was 30 and had three children.
