Stabroek News
October 15, 2003

A march organised by striking sugar workers from the Wales estate ended prematurely yesterday when police tear-gassed marchers and arrested thirteen workers.

Leader of the Justice For All Party, CN Sharma was among those arrested for holding an illegal procession.

As reported in the Sunday Stabroek of October 12, the sugar workers are demanding the removal of a chute at the West Bank Demerara factory that has been breaking down and affecting the workers’ weekly production incentive.

MORE FACTS: President Jagdeo's government closed down LBI Sugar Estate in 2003 and Diamond Sugar Estate in 2011.

Don't worry with the sugar workers. They only work hard for a living. Put the money in the national service folks. They don't need to produce anything. Let them enjoy the welfare benefits. When they graduate, they will hone their killing and robbery skills. Lots of job creation.

sugar dead...

if you know business, the cost of production cannot be more than the market price....

I agree that you operate for a profit. We have seen many governments propping up other industries just to help their citizens. Is it too much to ask them to help these unfortunate folks? They close the factory and put these people on the bread line. Give them the land and some help to do farming so they can provide for their families. They are not asking for a handout.

Did you read the facts of the story?

How you were not so concerned when the PPP closed estates...?

I would take you serious, but your views politically motivated....

Are you not politically motivated? I am sure that if the PPP was still in office, they would have taken care of the sugar workers. They would not have given themselves 50% raises and send people to the national service. Remember, the PPP depends on the sugar workers and rice farmers for their support.

I guess you cannot grow beyond your Indo KKK instincts.  Jagdeo CLOSED LBI and Diamond.  Around that time it was suggested that all of the other Demerara estates would eventually be closed.

Why is closing Wales so devastating when you say NOTHING about the closure of LBI and Diamond?

GuySuCo says proposed closure of Wales based on economic reasons
By Alva Solomon

MANAGEMENT of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) will today engage the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) on the proposed closure of the Wales Estate. The meeting will also address such other issues as the movement of workers to the Uitvlugt Estate on the West Coast of Demerara.

Company Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Errol Hanoman told the Guyana Chronicle last evening at NCN’s studios that the sugar corporation will address matters which may arise, including severance payment and the absorption of the affected workers into the operations of the Uitvlugt Estate

There is a plan in place, you don't see it.

What is the government going to do with all the cane fields? Why not let the people make a living from them? Don't starve them because they voted for the PPP.

When APNU said to privatize Guysuco you all screamed "black man a kill ahbe".

So what do you suggest?  Clearly no one is interested in Guysuco, otherwise some one would have made a proposal by now.

Any take over of Guysuco will result in loss making activities discontinued, increased automation, and thousands of workers dismissed.

Just as the Chinese did to Linden!

Let this gov't. do the following:

1) Close down the sugar factories

2) Close the Marriot

3) Leave the Rice industry to perish

4) Place all your bets on oil revenues when oil producing nations are suddenly becoming poor and bankrupt.

In fact Jagdeo closed down Diamond and LBI. Why didn't you scream that he was destroying sugar?  The PPP left Guysuco with production costs THREE times its revenues!  ADDRESS that problem you Indo KKK idiot, or reveal yourself as the fraud that you are!

The rice industry is a PRIVATE industry.  What proposals does it have to become more efficient?   Stop with the Venezuela nonsense because Maduro lost the last election, and will be COMPLETELY removed next time around.

The rice deal was POLITICAL, subject to the whims of a Venezuelan dictator.  Why did the PPP not plan ahead and anticipate the day that it would end?

Where are the private investors in Marriott which we were promised? Isn't the fact that they have NOT materialized evidence of the fact that the hotel is a huge risk, and NOT needed?  The govt wastes $$$ on the hotel when what is needed are proper roads in the interior.

Brazil offered to build a proper road and a deep water harbor.  The PPP did NOTHING, because there were no opportunities for bribes. Brazil is broke, so there will no longer be any chance of this happening.

Bhai two sugar factories closed in West Demerara years ago,and every one survive.

Maybe the workers survived, or maybe they didn't. The fact remains is that Jagdeo and the Indo KKK care NOTHING for the average Indian.

This is only a chance to create racial mischief. The PPP NEGLECTED Wales, and now Guysuco cannot fix it, given its severe cash crunch.

Rather than figuring out a solution to help these workers transition to something else, they scream "blackman bad".

Not arguing with you.  My point is that even if not every one was absorbed in ways that suited them the fact remains that the PPP are hypocritical.

Wales is in poor shape, and its clearly way beyond the financial capabilities of Guysuco to remediate it to a sustainable level.

Rather than being honest and admitting that the Demerara estates aren't profitable, and that the PPP THEMSELVES, had begun to SHUT them down, Jagdeo uses this as another excuse to exploit the racial insecurities of poorly educated Indians.

Jagdeo is like Trump. A man who exploits the anxieties of poor people rather than helping them improve their lot.  I can see why the Indo KKK love him so much.

When the factories were closed at LBI and Diamond it was a strategic move taking into consideration the geographic of other nearby factories to 1. absorb the work force. 2. transporting the cane by canals to other locations.3. the ability of the other existing factories to process more cane. Wales is on the West Bank of Demerara approx. 26miles from Uitvlugt, the cost of traveling   by the average worker will be too expensive, to them to relocate is no economical. Transporting the cane to Uitvlugt can only be done by road, the back canals are not connected. By the way, Wales employs Blackmen TOO, and the closure does not sit good with them also.  SO, all you ranting of indo KKK and racist behavior does not do good, it only says you are a Dumb Fool. DO YOU KNOW SUGAR.

. DO YOU KNOW SUGAR.

What I do know is that no company can survive if its production costs are 3X its revenues.  Guysuco has survived only because of BILLIONS of dollars in bail outs.  And despite this it is very indebted, and it owes its suppliers, and hasn't contributed to NIS.

Wales has been described as being beyond redemption. There are two choices.

1. Do nothing and the ENTIRE Guysuco collapses, throwing 17,000 families on the bread line.

OR

2. Shut down the less profitable parts of Guysuco to save it.

I suggest rather than engaging in your Indo KKK damnation you suggest alternative solutions for Wales.  Continuing what is a very bad situation is untenable. I suggest that you read today's article by "Peeping Tom" in today's KN. He is a known PPP sympathizer and even he concedes that Wales cannot continue as a sugar estate.

There are 12 months left before the estate shuts down.  Make good use of this by suggesting alternatives, rather than engaging in your usual "blackman bad" rant.

In fact, using poor capitalist economics Guysuco should be miniaturized with sugar production aimed at the local markets, with a greater focus on molasses production. This to fill the demand of local and regional rum producers.

Those who suddenly realize that privatization is the only option should remember this.

Jagdeo made a huge mistake and he was warned about this. In his usual arrogance, and incompetence, and with his huge greed for bribes, he moved ahead to GROW sugar, at a time when its viability was in question. Guyana production costs are high, and cannot be reduced to be competitive with global markets.  No one, including the EU, is going to pay more than global prices.

So if we cannot compete in global markets, clearly there is no scope for sugar.  Jagdeo needs to admit his error, and pay a constructive role in devising alternatives.  But he will not as he is the Grand Wizard, heading the Indo KKK party.
