Minister Ali rubbishes malicious KN article – says house was purchased from GuySuCo before he became minister
January 3, 2012

Housing and Water Minister Irfaan Ali has clarified details of his acquisition of a former GuySuCo-owned property at Leonora, West Coast Demerara, and at the same time condemned the Kaieteur News for misrepresenting the facts of the purchase in a “devious and sensational” article on New Year’s Day.
In the article captioned “After two years as Minister…Irfaan Ali builds mansion with poolhouse,” KN described the construction of the house. The newspaper noted that the house appears to accommodate eight bedrooms, a large living room, a detached kitchen and a walkway that runs around the front of the building.
Kaieteur News said too that the cost of the construction which is nearing completion is estimated at more than $300 million “One contractor, using the same government estimates, said that to fence the compound of that estate would be about $50 million,” KN wrote.
However, in response to the article, Ali clarified that the property in question was acquired before he assumed office as a minister of the government, and it has been almost four years now since he has been struggling to complete work on the property.
“Thirdly, the house referred to as mansion house was an old wooden house owned by GuySuCo. After acquisition, it is the same property that was rehabilitated and retro-fitted.” Ali said that more 70 per cent of the house remained in the same material and style that was there on acquisition. He noted that the only completely new piece of construction was that referred to as the pool house.
Additionally, the minister said that the acquisition of the house was no “secret or unscrupulous deal,” pointing out that the property was publicly advertised for sale before he became a minister.
“As any other Guyanese, I placed a bid for the property and my bid was the highest bid price offered. So what is secret and unscrupulous about this?” he asked. Ali asserted that “This devious act by Kaieteur News was aimed at a personal attack to my family and I. When someone builds a house, it is meant to be their home, a personal sanctuary where they feel secured and private. It is clear that the motive of Kaieteur News was to mislead and expose myself and family to security and other harm.”
Ali said it against this background that his lawyers would now look at the consequences of “this personal invasion based on lies and mischief. Though the very essence of peace and security that my personal property was supposed to have offered me is destroyed, I will leave my faith in the hands of my lawyers and the judicial system so that justice can be done,” Ali asserted.
Ali noted too that the house actually consists of three bedrooms not eight as stated in the article and worse of all, the fence which is chain-link and wallaba on the side and back, and concrete with grill work on the front is incorrectly and maliciously estimated to cost $50 million.

People dozz get excited bout these houses. What yiu see here does not cost alot and as the man said, especially if he retained portions of the old structure. Depending on the outfitting and finish, the house could costs just above a average good house. The land is what really costs big bucks and his is not spectacular.

There are some on GNI would believe anything that is written by The Waterfall Paper, even if it writes "the cow jump over the moon" they would actually take it for gospel.

If the KN article was inaccurate, they should be held accountable for the slander of the minister.

I support punishment for all corrupt ministers and anyone who is corrupt but the newspapers should be responsible and print accurate information

Of course, we all know Irfan is lying with every word he utters. You don't have to be a genius in order to figure out that property is a recent built one. The only original old structure is the sand under the structure.

WAS THE WATERFALL PAPER MALICIOUS?

Time will be judge of Kaieteur News’s intrigue- HPS

-Gov’t commits to exposing intellectual authors

THE most recent character attack levelled against Minister of Housing and Water, Irfaan Ali, in the Kaieteur News, is being viewed as an “insidious” plot by “intellectual architects “ rather than the work of run-of-the mill reporters. Head of the Presidential Secretariat and Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Roger Luncheon, made this observation yesterday, during his post-cabinet press briefing, at the Office of the President, when he condemned the attack in the Kaieteur News against Minister Ali, captioned ‘After two years as Minister… Irfaan Ali builds mansion with poolhouse’, on January 1, 2012.
“The Administration and Cabinet will vehemently reject such abuses, not only by correcting misinformation and disinformation, but also in going to great lengths to expose the intellectual authors, those responsible for designing these outrages. The inescapable reality about the media in Guyana today needs no better demonstration than Kaieteur News recent headlines and its attack on the young Minister Irfaan Ali,” he said.
According to Dr. Luncheon, “reason and professionalism” was clearly lacking, when the attack was conceived and put into operation. He noted too the refusal on the part of Kaieteur News “to exercise even a modicum of moderation about what is being published.”
He explained, “I do not believe, or accept that Kaieteur News went the acceptable distance in getting to the meat of the matter… I am pretty certain that they knew and can access information about the procurement, purchase and the sale of that home, I am pretty certain about that. At the end of the day, the descent into such mud-raking and yellow journalism must be checked and we all have a role to play, we all have to be a part of that process.”
The Cabinet Secretary noted with disdain the impunity with which such reports are accepted by society, which, according to him, has become accustomed to such things, and the inability of the regulatory bodies to also react to such happenings.
As to the implications of this, Dr. Luncheon said, “The regulatory bodies, as I have pointed out, have been emasculated by political intrigue … the Code of Conduct lost its effectiveness.”
The HPS reiterated that the attacks by Kaieteur News were simply not fair and reeked of a more insidious, comprehensive plot, which, from all indications, is not constrained to the print media alone.
He said, “I will say this, I am willing to let time be the judge of Kaieteur News’ intrigue and its intention. I am utterly convinced that this is a matter of great creativity, it’s not ordinary minds that conspire to produce work of this sort; I am prepared to let time be the judge… I am willing to allow Kaieteur News to vindicate itself, but I suspect that would not happen.”
The basis of the Kaieteur News report brought into question the construction of Minister Ali’s home, dubbed a “mansion”, at Leonora, on the West Coast of Demerara.
