The Most Popular Baby Names of 2019 so Far
Harry and Meghan were definitely inspired by this list.
What are the most popular baby names in 2019? Between the Social Security Administration's data and both Nameberry and BabyCenter's trend reports, we have a pretty good sense of the most popular baby names of the year. It's no surprise that picks like Emma and Liam reign supreme, as theyâve been popular in yearsâ past: Just take a look at the names on the cubbies of any elementary classroom for proof.
But what other trends have taken hold this year? Nicknames from the 20th century and monikers inspired by royalty seem to be on the rise. (And, sometimes these converge: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle picked one of the top 2019 trends for their son, Archie, by choosing a nickname as a first name.) Nature-inspired names are also big, as well as names cribbed from pop culture and celebrities. (Can you guess what family inspires the most baby names after the Royal Family?) Whether youâre looking for a unique baby name, something more traditional, or just want to keep up on the trends, hereâs everything you need to know about the most popular baby names of 2019. We even have a few predictions about whatâs coming up for next year, too.
While 2019 isn't done yet, we already have some guesses about the top baby names for 2020. Whether you're looking for names for boys, names for girls, or unisex names, a few have already made themselves noteworthy. Nameberry, a site for researching baby names, tracks its users' searches. According to the site, the hottest names for 2020 are Austin, Alva, Acacius, Tate, and Diego for boys; Adah, Reese, Mika, Paisley, and Amina for girls; and Ellis, Phoenix, Remy, Marlowe, and Shea for unisex names.
Every year, the Social Security Administration (SSA) releases a list of the most popular baby namesfrom the previous year, and the numbers are out for 2018. These were the top ten names for girls:
- Emma
- Olivia
- Ava
- Isabella
- Sophia
- Charlotte
- Mia
- Amelia
- Harper
- Evelyn
Of those, only Harper is new to the top 10, replacing the name Abigail, which fell out of the tenth spot. It's clear that, right now, we're really feeling those names that end in "a" â and we have been for a while, so there's a good chance these names will stay popular into 2020.
