We should show our disgust quietly in our numbers at the President’s Appreciation Day
By STABROEK STAFF | LETTERS | FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2011

Dear Editor,

I reiterate the AFC’s call to citizens to wear something black or put something black on their home or vehicle to show displeasure with the President’s Appreciation Day today.

I remind the traditional supporters of the PPP, especially those who identify with Komal Chand, Navin Chandarpal, Indra Chandarpal, Moses Nagamootoo, Ralph Ramkarran and others, of Dr Jagan’s vehement opposition to the personality cult and abuse of state resources under the PNC.

Just the other day, our President admonished our youth to learn of Guyana’s past, especially that under the PNC. However, today the PPP will engage in exactly what it just condemned! But, I do not recall the PNC using paratroopers or a police gymkhana, courtesy of the state, to enhance their celebrations. These probably cost as much as the hosting of Mass Games. And, though Mass Games pandered to the personality cult, it had positives such as physical exercise, teambuilding, showcasing the skills of our young people and highlighting our nation’s beauty. Nothing positive about the President’s Appreciation Day comes to mind.

Now that our President has exhorted us to study the PNC, especially under Forbes Burnham, this hypocrisy would not be lost on our young people. Nor would the fact that the PPP chooses to spend billions of dollars importing computers, knowing fully well these can be assembled by our young people right here in Guyana, thereby creating hundreds of jobs for them. Not lost on our young people either, is that the President’s pension is some 3 million dollars a month, while their beloved grandparents are given an old-age pension of a pitiable $7,500 a month or $250 a day.

Shameful too is that our woefully underpaid disciplined services will be paraded in front of the President and his adoring fans, not unlike in a dog and pony show. These are the same people the President expects to put their lives on the line protecting the state on meagre salaries of $45,000, while he pays a Presidential Advisor almost $900,000 a month, some 20 times more. These are the same people too, that the Home Affairs Minister admonishes to live within their means, while his salary (not counting allowances and other perks) is 10 times as much.

With our police underpaid and little forensic capability, is there any wonder there is so much unsolved crime? The three months of August, September and October mark two years since the disappearance of 10-year-old Ricky Jainarine, one year since the killing of 20-year-old Sheema Mangar, and three years since the murder of 26-year-old Alicia Foster respectively, all unsolved. How can this be a time for the President to be celebrated?

To everyone attending please whisper a prayer for Guyana. Too many things need to be rectified and redeemed. Like being induced or coerced to attend lest jobs or benefits are taken away. Whatever guilty consciences may be borne will be eased by such a prayer. Even Bishop Edghill will endorse this. He may wish to even do the prayer.

And so, let us show our disgust quietly in our numbers, and wear something black or put something black on our home or vehicle. And come Election Day, just how the PPP’s policy of “no child left behind” is leaving our young people behind, so must we leave the PPP behind.

Yours faithfully,
Gerhard Ramsaroop

WEAR BLACK TODAY to Appreciate Jagdeo
FRIDAY September 16, 2011

APPRECIATION DAY!

To show appreciation of Jagdeo’s legacy we ask all Guyanese to wear and display on your houses, businesses and cars something black on September 16, 2011.

The people of Guyana will appreciate Jagdeo for all that he has done to our lives and communities on Friday September 16 2011. Jagdeo’s legacy must be appreciated and told to generations to come. So President Jagdeo we appreciate and thank you for...

1. The 16% VAT - less money in our pockets.

2. The torture of a teenager by the Police while in the care and protection of the Guyana Police Force and denying him the paltry $6.5M compensation awarded by the court.

3. The $3M per month for life pension package you approved for yourself. You will receive three times what former US Presidents receive today. A pensioner in Guyana is forced to make do with $7,500 per month.

4. Highest maternal death rate in the Caribbean.

5. The failure of GuySuCo and the Skeldon project after a US$200M expense paid for by hard working tax paying Guyanese. Donald Ramotar was your resident economist.

6. Increased murder of women and high levels of domestic violence - a direct consequence of the economic pressures people face.

7. Highest rating for corruption in the Caribbean.

8. The very high electricity bills and unending blackouts despite billions of tax payer dollars invested.

9. Your favouritism and nepotism which resulted in one company being selected for in excess of 80% of the sea defence, the road and construction projects, $300M to a barber shop company, Fip Motilall’s extraordinary road building enterprise, the seizing of state land for distribution to your inner circle, including Ed Ahmad.

10. The designation of our country as a narcotic state by our friends.

11. Inability to protect the citizenry against crime in any neighbourhood.

12. A police force in which the Police Commissioner and his Assistant Commissioners argue over the Force’s relationship with drug lords.

13. Refusal to seek foreign assistance to investigate the murder of your own cabinet Minister.

14. Keeping investments away from Guyana which has led to most of us being unemployed and poor.

15. The fact that in excess of 80% of our graduates want to leave and leave their beloved country.

16. The remanding to prison of a teenager because he showed your speeding motorcade his finger.

17. The shooting at innocent civilians by a Minister of the government who is subsequently rewarded with a diplomatic posting.

18. The fact that the UN expert on minorities designated the country as deeply divided with unequal opportunities to its citizens based on race.

19. Dr Luncheon proclaiming that there are no Guyanese of African descent capable of representing the country at ambassadorial level.

20. The increased racial allocation of state assets in the country resulting in no African-Guyanese owning any lots in Coldingen Industrial estate and less than 10% in the Eccles industrial site.

21. The failure to honour the principles of “Freedom of Expression” through the refusal to grant radio licenses to anyone other than your friend.

22. Non-funding of Critchlow Labour College that affects African-Guyanese students.

23. The oppressively high tolls on the Berbice Bridge

24. Limiting Guyanese in Linden to one TV station run by the state despite the orders of the Chief Justice.

25. Overseeing the continued suffering of Linden from dust pollution and the clogging of Georgetown with garbage while being "Champion of the Earth".

26. Going through a public marriage ceremony which you say never was a marriage. No wonder Shaggy had to remind us that “IT WASN’T ME”.

27. Failure to develop any capacity in our indigenous brothers and sisters. This is so your friends and family programme can continue with road building in indigenous areas.

28. Continued oppressive conditions on the North-West ferry, with even a rape occurring on-board, and a consequent suicide attempt.

29. The 29 tons of duty free material from the “wrongfully accused” Ed Ahmad.

30. Threatened de-recognition of GAWU and GB&GWU. Their Excellencies Cheddi Jagan and Janet Jagan must now truly APPRECIATE the day they left you in charge.

31. And other ills and disasters too numerous to mention here.

I remember when a group of PPP stalwarts wanted to commemorate Dr.Jagan's birthday with a big function and he opposed the idea and instead had a dinner for the poor and elderly in Port Mourant....He himself helped to serve the food and refreshments....

Dear Mr Churchill, I respect and understand your point. But everone is different and we are in a very different Era. These Celebrations have become part and Parcel of modern Political Systems. I understand the need to fight Poverty and so on and I state without prejudice that Bharat Jagdeo has done much to tackle Poverty but YES much more need to be done.

I had an encounter with him during the Guyana Watch days and he certainly placed the poor above himself. I don't agree with his politics, but he lived to his word when it came to the poor. The PPP today is a lateral image of his values.

Nehru, let them rant and rave, this is what they'll do till election. Brace yourselves for the monstrous onslaught. They'll get downright nasty and up in peoples' faces. I agree that much was done under Jagdeo as he inherited many plans that were introduced under Dr.Jagan however he failed to continue in a transparent way the plans that he inherited....

He failed to curtail corruption and many of the corrupt folks benefitted in stead of the poor....Ed Ahmad was only one of the Jagdeo cronies who got super rich as a result of Jagdeo's support at the expense of the working people of Guyana....

I tend to agree with you to a certain extent. And I say this because a lot of claims are being put out there without any evidence. We all know CORRUPTION is alive and well in Guyana but I do not know to what extent. I agree the Govt needs to be MORE TRANSPARENT. Every GOOD GOVT should. Keep HOPE alive Bhai.

Champion of Dirt, President Bharrat Jagdeo

It is a real shame and disgrace that those who hijacked the PPP are trying to develop a cult of personality {BJ}, whose only success while in office were: taking corruption and fraud to higher level; polorizing the nation more; socializing with known criminals; increased scandals in the government; burden the working class with less services and the VAT etc.

He was very successful at these things, but what about improving the lives of Guyanese for the last 12 years... ZERO

They are trying to elevate him to a higher level than Dr. Jagan. This will never happen. BJ will never be on the same level as D. Jagan as a leader and politician.

Being a narcissist does not make you a leader

All true however Guyanese have no confuidence that teh AFC will change anything. Hence the disgracefully poor attendance at a meeting in a dense part of Gtwn.

GR you can ignore this fact all you want but the evidence is there and apparently the AFC has no ability to deal with it, except to set yourself for more PPP ridicule by attempting to compete against Hits & Jams. Of course the PPP will ignore the fact that if it was just speeches by jagdeo and Ramotar no one will be there.

Poor tactics.

I think gmoney went to the extreme, he paint he face black and put on dreadlocks to pass off as a black man. Clearly this call to wear black was meant as an affront to black people.

Well SJ got to give it to you. Even with Hits amd Jam that event looks like it is in Rose Hall and not just outside of Gtwn. The crowds look like they are at a funeral.

When you have fun, food and music and blacks dont show up you know they really hate you.
