President of the St Lucian Boxing Association David ‘Shakes’ Christopher has promised to send a team to ‘extract revenge’ on Guyana when the Guyana Boxing Association and Alford McDonald stages a card at the National Gymnasium on February 17.
“We want a rematch with the man called `Superman’. We wouldn’t rest until we get him. We are coming in his home town seek and destroy. It is going to be lights, camera and then canvas,” Christopher told Kaieteur Sport yesterday. ‘Superman’ referred to by Christopher is the Caribbean light welterweight champion Colin Lewis. The gangly Lewis flattened the St Lucian champion Nathan Ferrari when the two met last month in the Caribbean Championships. Christopher said St Lucia is willing to send a team of three boxers to the upcoming event. “We are going to Trinidad for the training camp then come down to Guyana to extract revenge,” the St Lucian president declared. When contacted McDonald disclosed that Jamaica is another country expected to participated. “The competition is now an annual event as I had promised last year. It will have and international flavor as several Caribbean territories have intentions of participating. We (GBA and the promoter) have been in contact with Jamaica and received the thumbs up. My expectation is that there will be high-quality boxing in Guyana next month,” Mc Donald said. The competition is being used as part of preparation of local boxers for several international engagements in the first half of the year. “I am committed to seeing our boxers reach their full potential. As a former amateur boxer I know what fighters go through. My aim is to make it a bit easier for them,” Mc Donald added. The February 17 12-fight card would be the first on the GBA calendar for the year.
