The National Assembly meets today at 2pm, but the aisle usually held by the parliamentarians from the Opposition, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), will be empty.

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo held a press conference yesterday, during which he informed journalists that the party will not be attending Parliament.

There are a number of important subjects on the agenda, including the circulation of a paper on tax laws for oil companies.

Jagdeo said that he doesn’t think that any sitting of the parliament should address any of these major issues, “especially before the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) rules definitively” on the cases that sprung from the No-Confidence motion which was voted on, on December 21, 2018

Attorney-at-Law Sanjeev Datadin, who is representing expelled Alliance For Change (AFC) parliamentarian Charandass Persaud, had filed a court action to the CCJ, intending to block the National Assembly’s sitting, but that request was declined by the Caribbean Court yesterday.

Jagdeo said the PPP’s position is that it will respect the CCJ’s ruling, but that the party will signal to the court “that we will not attend the sitting until the [No Confidence Cases are] definitively heard.”

The Opposition Leader said that he has taken note of the fact that the government already selected four persons to fill the positions vacated by the government-aligned dual citizens. Those persons are expected to be sworn in today.

On the other hand, he said that all of the dual citizens aligned with the PPP have resigned from the National Assembly, namely Gail Teixeira, Adrian Anamayah and Odinga Lumumba. Those positions will remain vacant.

According to Jagdeo, the PPP will not be recommending any persons to fill those positions. This is because he doesn’t expect there to be a need for the MPs to head back to Parliament before elections.

“If we win the case at the CCJ – and the prospects look good – there will be no need for [PPP to head back to Parliament], because parliament will not reconvene. So, we are waiting on the ruling from the CCJ.”

He said that he believes the court will rule in the favour of the PPP, and that that ruling will ensure elections are held early.

Further, he said that, if the ruling stands, it would have major implications for other countries in the region. Jagdeo said that the PPP has already written to almost every country in the region to pay attention to this case. This, he said, is due to the fact that the precedent used to reason that 34 votes are needed, instead of 33, to pass the motion, is one that is meant for legislatures with an even number of persons sitting in the assembly. He said that, if the ruling stands, it would mean that that precedent could also be applied to an odd number legislature.

Despite that possibility, Jagdeo said that the PPP is hopeful that the Appeal Court’s ruling will not stand.

The trouble is that old man Patterson and GECOM are still not doing any work and now that the current list is about to expire, that November date will be pushed to sometime in 2020 if ever. That is what we were warning about the despotic PNC since like forever.

The coalition government has a right to return to parliament as the court of appeal has ruled that the no-confidence vote in null and void. The PPP, on the other hand, is in its right to absent from parliament since it became the plaintiff in the NCV case. When the CCJ rule in favor of the PPP then the coalition shall relinquish power altogether and hold elections. Watch how them coolie will fry my balls for saying this.

Opposition-nominated commissioners accused of stalling GECOM’s work as walkouts continue

-after proposal to suspend statutory meetings until CCJ ruling

April 24 2019

For the eighth time in a row, the statutory meeting of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) ended prematurely yesterday due to a walkout from the opposition-nominated commissioners, one of whom has suggested that all meetings be suspended until the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) has ruled on the legality of the December 21st No-Confidence Motion against government.

Opposition-nominated commissioner Bibi Shadick told Stabroek News that she will continue the action for as long as the commission attempts to discuss house-to-house registration.

Prince, do you have any balls left?  If you have any balls left, the Indians that you hate so much may have a right to “buss” your balls or “fry it” and  put it in your mouth to enjoy.

In reality, the honorable retired justice Patterson is within his right to do nothing. The courts of Guyana has the final saying and that's what transpired. GECOM need not go forward. GECOM will remain neutral until CCJ says otherwise.

Are you saying that he also has the right to be paid for doing nothing? You should tell the electorate that the Granger government is paying his cronies for doing nothing, while the hardworking Guyanese are toiling away for next to nothing.

The CCJ has told the PPP that until they pass their ruling over turning the Guyana Court of Appeals the ruling of the latter stands.  In other words the NCV is invalid until proven otherwise.  And PPP supporters can continue calling the black judges all sorts of racist names.  Most of the CCJ judges are also black and might even personally know these two ladies.

By disobeying the current CCJ ruling the PPP might jeopardize its ultimate decision.

And the CCJ has not opined about their thoughts on the Court of Appeal ruling so I suggest that Jagdeo stops speaking on their behalf.

Its amazing that people scream about "Indian this and Indian that all day" railing that Indo rights must be respected and if someone reminds them that blacks also live in Guyana its loud hysterical screams about "anti Indo racism" and how people are obsessed with race.

I wonder if it is possible for you to think of "Guyanese" and note that no ethnic group in Guyana is a majority. Nor is any ethnic group monolithic.

I maintain that the PPP does in fact want to stall the election, much as they scream otherwise.  How come they have yet to name their PM candidate? Given that the PM replaces the president should the president be unable to serve their term then the electorate needs to have input into this.

And then the Irfaan thing which gets more scandalous every day.  Clearly the man isn't serious.

So the PPP stalls and then blames GECOM.  They were told long ago that the voter list becomes invalid after April 30 (next week Tuesday).  This was their rush to get the matter completed prior to that date.

The CCJ will not rule before then so it should be in their interest not to interrupt GECOM.

There are 120k supposed dead people on the list.  If those names remain and the Coalition wins you know that the PPP will scream about "dead man votes".  So why not clean up the list and reduce the avenues that rigging might occur?
