May 26 was made a national holiday post 1992. When I was growing up PNC never made that day a national holiday. Of course old heads like Gilbakka could better explain the politics behind the reasons why PNC emphasizes Feb 23 and PPP May 26.

TK, Independence Day May 26 was a national holiday from 1966 to 1969. From 1970 Papa Burnham de-emphasized May 26 in favour of Feb 23.

According to Sir Shridath Ramphal in his latest book, while he was drafting Guyana's independence constitution as Attorney-General, Burnham wanted a republican constitution right away with executive presidency. Ramphal reasoned with Burnham not to go so fast. Burnham acquiesced, otherwise Independence Day would have ceased to be a holiday in 1967 or so.
