CXC Exams were once scheduled on Mash Day and kids had no choice, so it was probably not a deliberate act to have the elections on the same day as the Exams.

Our Sister is talking about

 Independence Day - May 26...

Alena is Correct.

Guyanese Kids had to write

CXC Exams

on an Important National Holiday

In which year was CXC scheduled for Feb 23?

CXC took place on 5/26 one year...Independence Day.  My bad, not mash day.

May 26 was made a national holiday post 1992. When I was growing up PNC never made that day a national holiday. Of course old heads like Gilbakka could better explain the politics behind the reasons why PNC emphasizes Feb 23 and PPP May 26.

TK, Independence Day May 26 was a national holiday from 1966 to 1969. From 1970 Papa Burnham de-emphasized May 26 in favour of Feb 23.

According to Sir Shridath Ramphal in his latest book, while he was drafting Guyana's independence constitution as Attorney-General, Burnham wanted a republican constitution right away with executive presidency. Ramphal reasoned with Burnham not to go so fast. Burnham acquiesced, otherwise Independence Day would have ceased to be a holiday in 1967 or so.

Thanks. I know it was not a holiday in 1992. There was a big debate post 1992 whether May 26 should be a holiday again. We know it's now a holiday once more.

Feb 20 is Burnham's birthday.

Feb 23 has to do with the Berbice slave revolt of 1763.

Cheddi and Janet Jagan always put a premium on May 26, having made their reputations as independence fighters. That's why they reinstated a national holiday on May 26 after 1992.

I have many, many questions about this and I am disappointed and shocked at such mediocre display of Management.

Pandit Mitwah thinks, and I concur, that Ramotar consulted an astrologer when he visited India three weeks ago. The astrologer consulted his patra and concluded May 11 as an auspicious date for Ramotar.

Seriously, Ramotar was under intense pressure to announce a date and he did so in a panic without considering all the variables.

The actions of a leader, hehehehe
