(CNN) -- An Afghan woman imprisoned for adultery after a relative raped her is free to decide whether she wants to go home or remain in detention for her safety, President Hamid Karzai said Thursday.

Karzai said he's asked the justice minister to meet with the woman and her rapist to find out whether she wants to marry him and legitimize her daughter.

The woman was sentenced to 12 years in prison after she reported that her cousin's husband had raped her two years ago. CNN is identifying her only as Gulnaz to protect her identity.

The president said he was concerned that if the woman went back to her village after her release, she may face reprisals from the conservative society.

"If Gulnaz tells the justice minister today that she would marry the man and wouldn't have any problem after release or if she presents any other way that she could live without any risk to her life and her daughter's, then the Justice Ministry will issue a statement today announcing her release,"
the president's spokesman said.

Karzai wants her released, but the final say depends on the outcome of the justice minister's meeting, said Aimal Faizi, the spokesman.

The decision came during a high-level judiciary meeting called by the president after media inquiries and a petition with nearly 5,000 signatures.

Members of the sitting Cabinet are expected to visit Gulnaz in prison and present her with the option of marrying her attacker.

Gulnaz's lawyer has said she does not want to marry her rapist and has a safe place to go on release.

The woman did not immediately report the attack over fear of reprisals, and she was sentenced to prison for adultery because her attacker was married at the time.

Her sentence was later reduced to three years.

Last week, a spokesman for the attorney general said while the original sentence for adultery was reduced, she had failed to report her rape quickly enough and would have to serve some time in prison for that offense.

The woman is raising her daughter in jail and had previously agreed to marry her attacker in order to be released and legitimize her daughter. She also fears attack from her rapist's relatives, something he denies is a risk.

Her plight gained international attention when the European Union blocked the broadcast of a documentary made about her ordeal saying that it would further jeopardize her safety.

Another Harrowing tale

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Gunmen attacked and sprayed an Afghan family with acid in their home after the father rejected a man's bid to marry his teenage daughter, authorities said Thursday.

The gunmen broke into their home and attacked the 18-year-old daughter, her two sisters and their parents, according to authorities in Kunduz province.

All five received medical treatment, with the mother and two daughter later discharged, medical officials said.

The teenager is in intensive condition and her father is still hospitalized, said Abdul Shokoor Rahimi, a doctor at the provincial hospital.

The attack came on the heels of her family's refusal to marry off the teen to another local gunman.

A month ago, a gunman tried to marry the teenager, but her family turned him down and instead got her engaged to a relative, said Nadera Geya, head of women's affairs in the province.

"A few nights back, a group of armed men ... poured acid over her, on her two young sisters and her parents after beating up her father," Geya said.

The whole family was brought to the hospital Monday, local hospital officials said.

A search is under way for the attackers, who fled the area afterward.

Acid is becoming a famous tool for militants and gunmen in the area. Three years ago, insurgents in motorbikes sprayed acid on at least 15 school girls in southern Kandahar province.

By Adnan Shabrawi

JEDDAH – A 23-year-old unmarried woman was awarded one-year prison term and 100 lashes for committing adultery and trying to abort the resultant fetus.

The District Court in Jeddah pronounced the verdict on Saturday after the girl confessed that she had a forced sexual intercourse with a man who had offered her a ride. The man, the girl confessed, took her to a rest house, east of Jeddah, where he and four of friends assaulted her all night long.

The girl claimed that she became pregnant soon after and went to King Fahd Hospital for Armed Forces in an attempt to carry out an abortion. She was eight weeks’ pregnant then, the hospital confirmed.

According to the ruling, the woman will be sent to a jail outside Jeddah to spend her time and will be lashed after delivery of her baby who will take the mother’s last name. – Okaz/SG __

I do have a problem with that and these guys should be punished, but to attribute such acts to Shariah laws is nothing but propaganda.

Go tell that lie to the UN and the International Human Watch NGO's confronting Karazi on the matter. The state religion is Islamic and the law in place is acceptable to both Islamic sects with the Constitution insisting that no law is contrary to islamic law. If that is the case then how do you say the above is not Sharia as implemented in Afghanistan.

The 2009 implementation on family laws states "“Shi‟a family law”, applicable to all Shi‟a followers in Afghanistan. The constitution states in Article 131 that “Shi‟a jurisprudence shall be applied by courts in cases involving personal
matters”.

The reason these things exist is because Muslim fools like you neglect to question whether the barbarism is Islamic or not and form committees and NGO's to atteck them from within Islam. They call it Islamic law. I call it Islamic law as practiced by them. You can call that bigotry if you so chose but you will only make yourself an ass.

I would more likely attribute this to criminal behavior rather than religious edicts. There is nowhere in the good book that rationalizes this behavior.
However I am still puzzled why a rape victim should be jailed for adultery. I am not privy to the laws of Afghanistan, but if anyone has access to Afghan jurisprudence material, I would like to read it.
