That potato is unprofitable is short term thinking and backward mentality.

It is actually.  Potatoes are dumped on the spot market as a result of over supply of subsidized farmers in Europe.  If you are to allow that to take over your nation, every local farmer would starve!

I asked my cousin in Guyana who imports a lot of potatoes.  He said as long as the cheap imports are allowed to flood the markets, he has to play that game!

Potatoes are one of our import food to Guyana.

This is an example: You buy on a large scale when the farmers are reaping, but  we do not take all the shipment at the same time into Guyana.

At harvest season, Potato can be sold for $2000. Per 50lbs bag in Guyana. The same very Potato, when in short supply can be sold for $4500. Per bag and will be sold out.

Bai, nah tek worries. I just messing around. Seriously though, what exactly is Guyana noted for on the international scene. Right now it has to be for honoring a man convicted in the US of terrorism. 😀

Don't joke. Guyana is well known for its rum and coke.

You can speak of the coke business, as you had boasted on this forum how big your family is / were involved.

Based on the info. various posters provided I have to conclude that Guyana does not have a comparative advantage in producing potatoes. We have to think economics when we think about producing anything. Our cost of production vs. that of our competitors must be considered before making an investment.  Guyana cannot prosper if we cannot produce competitively. We cannot live in isolation and make decisions on matters of investments just because it sounds good.  If we cannot compete with other countries then we will have to come up with innovative ways to be competitive.  We just can't give up. We have to find solutions.  This is where our intellectual minds have to come into play.  Our economists, engineers, and others brainiacs have to work hard to come up with an answer.

Even producing for local consumption alleviates burdens on balance of trade so one cannot compare what it will cost locally versus import. growing potatoes doesn't seem to require much costly machinery so its cost factor should be favorable versus burdening their foreign 'reserves'.

Ksazma,

Guyana is in dire need of export earnings.  Locally grown foods would alleviate the burden a little.  We need to think big and take greater risk

What do you think French Fries are made from? The world love french fries and the demand for potatoes is high because of this. When McDonalds opened restaurants in Russia they were unable to get the right variety of potatoes in that country to make fries.

I don’t think Guyana has the capability to export potatoes but if they produce enough to satisfy the local demand it would alleviate the need to spend forex on imported potatoes.

That should be the immediate goal.  Saving forex is like earning forex.   It will also add to stabilizing the rate.
