WHAT is Guyana going to do with the gas that comes with its crude oil when offshore production from the Liza field commences in 2020, as currently planned?
It’s the same challenge that initially faced Trinidad and Tobago when we began extracting oil from discoveries in the East Coast Marine Area (ECMA).
The decision was quickly made to channel gas into an export-oriented petrochemical sector, specifically methanol and ammonia, which led to the development of the world-famous Point Lisas industrial estate.
Guyana could go in the same direction, if its government commits itself to that.
Surprisingly, in his address to the “Building Capacity For Managing The Hydrocarbon Sector in Guyana,” back in October, 2015, our former energy minister Kevin Christian Ramnarine did not advance this as a possibility.
But with 100,000 barrels per day (b/d) of crude output due to begin in 2020 from the Liza field, only three years from now, it is incumbent on the Caricom headquarters territory to start serious planning for the utilisation of associated gas and, indeed, the non-associated gas that will undoubtedly be found as ExxonMobil, discoverer of Liza, continues its exploratory work as it is pledged to do.
